backgrounds with stripes

Shelleyrae, thanks for the tips on making backgrounds. I'm using DIP9. It sounds easy....will give it a try and see what happens. I guess a lot of this is just playing around with the software. By the way, i've seen your gallery, and it's really impressive.

Like I said, I have followed your torn paper tut and I get good results from that, but then just wanted to get it one step further. I sure hope MS includes more tools in a future upgrade. Do you ever hear rumors of MS doing another version to DIP?

thanks for responding.

Rolled & torn paper

Hi Shelleyrae,

I love your rolled paper technique. Do you have a tutorial for that?

Also, I cannot, for the life of me, get a realistic looking torn edge to paper. I have tried several different tutorials and my results are passable, but I really want a realistic torn look, almost like you could reach out and touch it. Which tutorial do you recommend the most and do you have any special pointers? Thanks.

Valerie, looked through Microsoft's site, but didn't see anything. Do you have a link that would give me more info about what will be new?

Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10.0 for 32-bit Windows
These products will replace the following products:

· S83-00018 Digital Image Suite 9.0 Win32 EngBrit CD ROW

General information:
Microsoft digital imaging products provide innovative, easy-to-use digital photography software sure to please photo enthusiasts at any level of expertise. This year Microsoft Corp. introduces Digital Image Suite 10, a professional-grade collection of robust organizational and image-editing tools for the photo enthusiast. Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10 is a complete photo software solution that continues the Microsoft tradition of providing powerful tools that are easy to use. Building on the popularity of Digital Image Suite 9, Digital Image Suite 10 combines the power of Microsoft Digital Image Library 10 and Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 for a seamless, integrated photography solution for everyone — from the first-time user to the professional.

Features & Benefits

Digital Image Library 10 offers even more ways to organize and share images, and superior archival technology to protect images for years to come.

New! Flags mark photos for a variety of actions, such as to print or share with friends and family, touch up or review later, or create a photo project. Digital Image Library 10 includes four predefined flags (For Review, Needs Touchup, To Share and To Print) and two miscellaneous flags. The title and icon of all six flags can be customized.
New! Photo Story 2.0 adds more functionality and customizing options to the popular features of last year’s Photo Story Lite. Along with adding narration and music, now consumers can customize pan and zoom effects and save Photo Story projects for access and editing later. Photo Story 2.0 is launched directly from within Digital Image Library 10, after users select the photos they want to include.
Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 delivers a complete set of advanced image-editing tools designed to provide all the editing and creative features photographers want and need, and the unparalleled ease of use they expect from Microsoft. From one-touch Auto Fix tools to professional-quality color, lighting and exposure control, Microsoft Digital Image Pro provides photo enthusiasts with room to grow and the tools they need to take better photos.

New! Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 offers three new Auto Fixes for quick and easy ways to touch up images. Auto Fixes in Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 include these:
New! Color Auto Fix analyzes and automatically corrects the color balance in the image by changing the light source color temperature and color channel balance.
New! Exposure Auto Fix automatically adjusts the overall brightness and contrast in an image.
New! Camera Phone Auto Fix automatically improves images taken on mobile phone cameras so they look great on other devices.
Levels Auto Fix sets the optimum balance in each of the picture’s three color channels.
Contrast Auto Fix improves contrast by setting the white and black dots in the picture.
New! Color and Saturation toolset houses all color correction features in one task pane, including Color Auto Fix and adjustable sliders for source lighting, saturation and color balance. The interactive user interface allows consumers to see changes in the image as they go. The Color and Saturation task provides unprecedented control over color correction by adding the ability to balance color features over various tonal ranges.
New! Exposure and Lighting toolset contains all exposure and lighting correction tools in a single location, giving consumers total control over photo exposure. Consumers can access exposure and contrast auto fixes, add flash, reduce backlighting, and adjust the shadows, midtones and highlights of any photo.
New! Levels and Curves provides the highest level of exposure and color control, by allowing consumers to manipulate the image curve over five channels: luminosity, red, green, blue and saturation. Accessed from either of the two toolsets, the Levels and Curves functionality will be easy for advanced photographers to use right away, but even intermediate users will benefit from this interactive and educational tool.
New! Selection Brush includes two major improvements. Now consumers can “paint in” the selection area with different brush sizes, making it easy to fine-tune selections. Consumers also can set the transparency of their selection, allowing them to make partial changes to selected areas of an image.
New! Selection Mask improves the visibility of the area selected for editing. The Selection Mask provides the option of placing a translucent, colored layer over the selected area, or over the area not selected. Consumers can select the transparency of the mask and even choose from a variety of mask colors depending on their needs. The Selection Mask lets consumers see a truer representation of the selection than the conventional “marching ants” outline.
New! Noise Reduction helps fix photos by reducing luminant and chromatic noise without harming detail in images.
Improved! Sharpening improvements sharpen image contrast without affecting the color. The sharpening algorithm in Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 only operates on the luminosity channel, so consumers get sharp images without serious color changes, colored halos or increased color noise.
New! Unique Panoramic Stitching enables consumers to stitch together multiple images to create just one. Although some competitors offer single-dimension stitching (meaning they can only stitch images that are side by side), Digital Image Suite 10 supports stitching in two dimensions, a unique new feature. Images can be stitched above and below each other as well as side by side.
New! Print Sharpening optimizes image quality for printing and viewing on a computer screen. Often, what looks good on a screen may turn out slightly blurred or out of focus when printed. By sharpening an image prior to printing, consumers can define the edges and get a much crisper print as a result. The sharpening is not applied to the original file, so Microsoft Digital Image Pro 10 enables better print quality without modifying and potentially sacrificing the screen quality of the original image.
Improved! Mini Lab provides a quick and easy way to apply common effects to many files at once. The Mini Lab includes the new Auto Fixes, the ability to resize a batch of photos and a streamlined user interface. To help distinguish which images have been edited, Mini Lab will mark them with the word “Modified” underneath the file name.
Improved ease of use. A product tour, an instructional video and updated tutorials suggest and explain solutions to complex photo concepts and problems.
Plug-in filter support for Adobe Photoshop. Photo enthusiasts can expand on the 200 filters that come with Digital Image Suite 10 by using Adobe Photoshop plug-in filters for endless photo effects

Torn rolled paper

It took me ages to figure ot how and its a very time consuming and fiddly process. I can tell you how I did it but not really give a tut.
Start with a long narrow rectangle, remove teh line, fill with colour
Use the freehand tool to "tear" the edges. Add a shadow and offset it.
Now use the paint brush to paint the darker edge on top. follow the line of the tear pretty much. Then choose a lighter colour paint to paint on the edge to create thelighter highlights.
Then use the transparency brush to tidy up the shadow so its more uneven.
I did this two only two rectangles then used flip to reverse them and then grouped the four together and then just duplicated the four to fill the page.
