Susan, thanks for the warning. I will certainly join in the booing of Microsoft over this lousy decision. We had installed Vista on one of our PCs and took it off after a few months. There is a nice chess game, but it wasn't worth losing all the programs that just didn't work in Vista.
When I first found out about my doomed software, I freaked out a little and started researching pricing on PSE or CS3, though it made me sick to switch back to software that I have had such bad experiences with. Then my rational side kicked in and I realized, "Hey, I have 2 years to work with my beloved DIS. I don't have to change until 2010." So I'm taking this time to get really comfortable with the software and learn what features are most important to me. Next year or so, I'll use the help files and learn how what I do relates to the Adobe versions. I figure I'll see what Adobe puts in PSE 6 and decide then if I want to go all out for real Photoshop. I'll also look at ACDSee because it may do all I want. But it's silly for me to make that decision now just because Microsoft made their announcement.
I did purchase ACDSee and have added all my old labels into the Organizer. I'm still labeling things and it's taking a while because I have to drag the items to the label or the label to the items. I think it will take another week of doing this before I'm caught up. Of course, all the goodies I bought at that End of August sale just make the job bigger, heh heh.
