I can't save files in PNG format

I just got this program and did a whole layout but when I went to save it as a PNG file it won't let me save it in that format. I want to be able to save it so I can work on it later but not have it flatten and not be able to make changes. Am I missing something?? Do I have to have a special program to be able to save in that format? The program just shut down on me and I lost my whole layout! So frustrating!!

I have had that happen to me.

It usually happens when the properties or file size is too large.
You may get the message that Mcrosoft DIP is not responding at the top. Sometimes it will eventually save (after 10 minutes) of trying or it will just shutoff.

I have learned to save as .png frequently when working on a layout.
Each time you add a paper, element or picture the file size gets larger.

The other day I was working on a layout that was so large that I knew I couldn't post it in the gallery even when I was saving for the web . So here's what I did:

I went to new file, put the background and a few elements, brushes, etc. on. then saved as a .jpg. (This reduced the size). Then I added more elements then saved it as a ,png so I could move the elements around. You can then layer more and more on top.

It worked by reducing the file size.

If this is not your problem, shellyrae or others may be along to help.

Yep, sounds like the file size was too large. Sometimes I find that DIP won't let me save a file to the location I have selected. I have no idea why that happens but I just save it somewhere else and it works.

Jeanne's suggestion of saving the first part as jpg and the rest as png after more elements are added is probably the easiest way round it.
