Separating Photo into an Element

Hello. I am not sure my question will make any sense. But I am still going for it.

How do I take a photo that I have taken with my camera and then changed into a sketch and make it an element. I want it to be separate from the background. This way any color I add behind the sketch will also be that color rather than stay white. I hope this makes since. Do I have to make my photo image a brush? I know I have done that before?

Thanks,

Teresa

You can't make your photo into a brush persay. First you would have to use the marquee tool to cut out the part of the photo you want then you would need to use filters to change it into a sketch. Then you'd need to use the magic wand to remove the white. I think there's a tut in the DIP tut section for making a sketch but I'm not sure if the tut section is fixed yet or not. I'm on my way out but I'm sure Shelleyrae will see this and have a more detailed answer for you.
