Oval with fading

I've looked every where and just can't figure it out. How do I add and oval frame around a picture and have it fade (soft edges - like an old fashion picture).

I used to use Ulead Photo Impact and I could do it in there (too complicated of a program for my needs)....

Any help would be appreciated.

Bruce

Insert/Shape/Circle. Remove the line. Change Colour to suit. Use the resizing handle on the side to squish the circle in to make an oval.

Go to Effects/Edges/Soft and adjust to suit.

If you want to use the actual photo to make into the oval shape:
Open the pic.
Use the marquee tool/circle. Uncheck the "keep ratio/proportion" box. Mark out the area you want to use. Go to Edit/Copy then Edit/Paste. Delete the orignal photo. Now apply the Soft Edge effect as above.

Also, check out the following video tutorial.

I've done that before BUT I guess I'm doing something wrong. Here's how I did it: opened picture, insert shape (circle), dragged the circle to look like an oval, (not sure how to remove line so I made the line white). I then did the effects, edges but its just the opposite of how I want it to look. I want the picture inside the oval to be clear and then have the oval have a faded boarder....like an old style picture.

Suggestion?

Bruce

Okay, try this.

Open your pic. Mark out the oval part with the marquee tool. Copy and paste the selection as I said before. Apply the soft edge to the oval shape.
Click on the bottom layer and and change it to white or a soft grey maybe. Colour will depend on the look you want. Keep the bottom layer selected and go to Effects/Blur/Gaussian. Play around with the slider to get the look you want.

I'll have a play with a photo and see what I come up with for you.

Also try this.

Mark out your oval. Click on "Feather" and change to around 100.
Copy and paste.
Click on the bottom layer and change the colour to suit.

Thanks for all your help.....here is what I did.

Like you suggested, I opened my picture, used the marguee tool (shape unchecked) and drew my oval. I then hit the invert, hit cut and it removed everything except the oval picture, I then used the effect/edges/soft and it done.

Up until the invert thing all I was doing is removing the inside of the picture.....LOL.

Thanks again.

Bruce

P.S. I sure wish more people used MS DI....its a very good program and much easier to use than most of them I've tried.
