HELP our DIP Divas!

I've looked at the tutorial SR has, and the general info on organizing our kits etc. Well, I'm ready to really bite the bullet and get organized (YIKES) I do have the Digital Image Suite 2006 editor. and I've had it catalog all my folders that I have my kits in and my papers in. FIrst question, it doesn't acutally COPY them again does it? I'm thinking hard drive nightmare. Then to add the labels to each file in each kits (yowsa) can I glean how you guys do it? Do you add labels like color, holiday, designer. ie red, valentines, christmas, Gina Miller for one paper. since my kits are still in tact, I really wouldn't need to label them by kit name right???? The labels are just to search all my red papers when I need to, right? Then another question, since inside all the kits are tou and pirate and sometimes thank you files, is there a way you can highlight just those files and un catelog them? make sense? Thanks ladies, you're the best. You know, I really did try to find where I"m sure you've addressed this already. I do have all the ezines, if it's in one of those, just tell me which one and I can look it up. THANKS!

Firstly, only the thumbnail is copied - not the full file so the space the database uses is nowhere near the size of the full kits.

Some people multi categorize - They keep kits intact then copy each paper and element into separate folders and then keyword them by pattern, solid, colour, theme.

To be honest, I'm way too lazy for that. I just keep my kits together and add Designer/Kit Name/Location of item eg. DVD1 and a general keyword such as paper, slide, ribbon.

You should be able to remove an item. Offhand I'm not certain but can you right click on a thumbnail and delete it from the Library?

Hi Amy
I really shouldnt say it again but I need to update that lol
I'll be honest Ive had to stop using the library because I maxed out its memory lol. Apparently it has a limit and me with my 100+GB of elements is too much for it so Ive switched to ACDSEE - Id prefer to use the library - its easy to use.
I am using the same sorting structure for both though. It all depends on the way you work. For me this structure makes sense because I am often looking for something in particular eg a paper with red coloring and a floral pattern
Ive attached some screen shots of my labels fo ryou - let me know if you cant read them to get the idea
Since Kim is answering this the same time as me she would have let you know that yes you can delete thumbnails from the gallery, no it doesnt copy files

Thats all one list by the way - had to scroll through the window to show the entire thing

Thanks ladies. I think I'll get started. I"m just going to start in my "go to" designer's first, since they are the ones i usually go to when I'm looking for a red paper etc. but with so many great 1 kit wonders (for lack of better word) sometimes I'm looking for, say, leather belt and search for hours trying to remember, so I knew it was time to get started organizing. So, another program specific question. You have labels, and you have flags, and the file name (can't remember what they call that - it's the first line item in the categories) can you change the file name and will only change the thumbnail per se, not the orginal file name? KWIM? I don't necessarily need the lengthy file names in this area (designer, kit name etc.) I just don't want to change the name permanently, because I do LOVE that everyone pretty much is consistent with nameing their files - for credit purposes. SR, good to know you can max out your library. I think I'm only at 50GB in these three areas that I am looking to organize. I won't use it for my pictures as I use a different system that is already organized and works well for me. THanks again ladies.

If you change the File name it will change the name of the file itself so dont do that
Go under View and you can turn of the thumbnail file names so you dont see them if you want

Thanks Shelleyrae. That's exactly what I was looking for, someone who's "gone before me" in all the possible categories. Of course, I know it's a personal preference, but it at least gives me a place to start and I can alter to my own supply. Wish me luck, I think I'll start with Shabby Princess stuff......
Oh, one more question. Now, when I catalog all my current supply, what happens when you add new files to these areas? Will I easily be able to see what hasn't been cataloged yet? I download from the various scrapbook sites into a temporary file first then when that gets somewhat full, I move the kits into their proper places. (Ideally this is when I should do a back up as well - before moving) Should I have the DIS library also include a search of this temporary folder, so I can catalog at this point before final move? Then when I move them, will the labels move too?? KWIM?
thanks

You are better off tagging when they are in the folder you plan to keep them in.
What I used to do and now do in ADCSEE too is download the files directly to the folders etc they belonged in. Then when it came to cataloging them I simply change the sort mode of that folder to Date Created and that puts all the newest folders that i downloaded at the top of the list - then I tagged those. You can tell when something has been tagged as there will be a little icon is in the top right? corner of the thumbnail so you dont have to worry about not knowing which has been tagged and which hasnt.
You can use the archive feature or sort feature to identify all the kits you downloaded in a certain time frame and then burn those to Cd/DVD in the same way. If using archive, the files already archived are then next excluded from an archive sort so you can see what hasnt been burnt yet.
