The easiest way to do as you have asked is to add the first background and then drag the second on in the same way, position as desired and then crop the second paper. You do that by selecting the second paper and then going to Format> Crop> Selected object. Drag out to cover the area you want to keep and then select Done. "in a kit- is it better to have all the papers, elements, alpha that goes with kit in one big folder that you open all at once into the files section. Or should you keep it seperate and keep doing the Control-O thing. And do you always have to copy and duplicate each element before using it? "
Opening that many elements at one time will slow done your program remarkably - you can use drag and drop which i much easier - tut is here

In the tut I dont actually recommend making a copy of the original except when using backgrounds , only that after you drag the element onto the canvas,close the original file. This both prevents you accidently saving over your original file but also means your program will not be slowed down with memory problems.
