resizing images

I start with a blank 8X10 page, then add photos, 4 or 6 to a page, resize and crop them, edit etc., print out and put them in our photo albums. When resizing images I have noticed that when just grabbing the arrow at the corner and sliding it to make the photo smaller, it reduces the quality of the image. I assume this is because it is keeping the pixels per inch the same? (BTW this didn't seem to be a problem back in Microsoft Picture It! Publishing) So I tried resizing the image using FORMAT - Resize Image. No matter what I do it just resizes the entire canvas. I see that it is possible to select resize canvas but I have tried several times, being careful to select only the image and chosing resize image. The selected picture remains the same size relative to the canvas. Help! . Thanks, Amy

Open your picture separately and resize it then drag it onto your opened canvas.

I just played around with resizing. If you have a canvas open with a background and other things already on it, using Resize Image makes everything - canvas, background and everything else change size. If you Resize Canvas, only the canvas changes but leaves everything else as they were. So, I would go with opening the photo separately, resizing and then dragging it onto your canvas.

Oh and you might like to check the resolution of your canvas and photos. Ideally they should be the same.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I am not sure where to check the resolution of the canvas. If I go to Format, resize canvas - it doesn't give the resolution there and I can't find it anywhere else. The digital photo opens up at the whopping size of 13X18" but again, I cannot tell what the resolution is when it opens up. Again I tried opening it up in the same project and dragging the photo completely off the canvas, being sure to have only that photo selected and attempted to resize it, it didn't seem to have any effect on the photo sixe relative to the canvas size, but now the canvas has been resized also. I have tried opening the image up in a separate project, resizing it, and then doing cut and pasting into old project. Guess what, the photo returns to the original size. Maybe if I can set the resolution of the entire canvas but I am not sure how to lock that in. Thanks, Amy

OK I found out how to check the default setting. Tools, options, resolution setting. I assume this is canvas setting. It is set at 300 pixels per inch. It seems however that new pics are brought in at 96 pix per inch. Thanks, Amy

In DIP10:
Open the program.
Go to:File/Open
Browse to your picture and click on it.
Now go to: Format/Resize Image. You will see the inch, pixel and resolution for your photo. Click in the circle next to "pixels" to lock it. Now change the resolution to 300. Now click in the circle next to "resolution" to lock it in. Click OK to return to the workspace.

Now go to: File/New. You should again see "inches", "pixels" and "resolution".
Make sure the resolution is set at 300 and locked in.
Now change the "inches" to the size you want. You may need to either check or uncheck the "maintain ratio" box depending on the size you want.
Click OK to return to the workspace.

On the right of your screen you should see the Stack and Files. If not, on the toolbar click on "stack" and "files" buttons. You will see your photo and the blank canvas.

Now, from the "Files" on the right, click on the new blank canvas to make it the active item.

Now left click on your photo and drag it onto your canvas.

If you have already dragged the photo onto the canvas you can only resize it by using the resizing squares around the edge of it. You will need to resize as I wrote above.

You should also check the default resolution in DIP.
Go to: Tools/Options and you can check to see that it is at 300dpi.

To check the resolution of your photo before you open it in DIP: Browse to your photo. Right click on it and select "properties". Now click on the "summary" tab. The resolution is listed there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! That worked. I had to set the resolution of the canvas and then lock it in first like you said. I also didn't realize that there was so much information on the summary tab when browsing photos. You helped me a lot. Amy
