I guess I am thinking I would like to make some patterned paper and would like to use something other than circles or plain shapes KWIM?

You can make a shape out of anything..under Insert > More Shapes teh gallery opens and there is access to more shapes. Other than that you can find shapes etc everywhere and anywhere. I notoce you are on quite a lot of creative teams - perhaps you can ask the designers where they find their resources.
