Resizing imported pictures in DIP

Hi,

I know that this is basic, but is aggravating the heck out of me.

For example, when I insert a picture from my picture cd-rom, the picture that I import automatically enlarges to 12 X 12 or whatever size of canvas I have open at the time.

How can I import the picture at notmal size of 4X6? How can I prevent it from automatically resizing to fit canvas?

Thank you.

P.S. I posted this question in the beginner's forum instead of here. Sorry.

I'm not sure....but I think it has to do with the actual resolution of the picture rather than stretching to fit the canvas. I just opened a 12 x 12 blank layout and added a picture, when I opened the same picture (as a separate file) they were basically the same size.

Resizing imported pictures

Hello,

I knew I could count on my cyber-friends at SBB to try to solve my dilemma.

First, I open up DIP and create a 12X12 canvas or insert a pre-made bg.

Then, I insert picture> from my computer and select the drive where my photos are in a cd.
Just so you know, the picture on the disk IS perfectly clear and in focus.

When the picture is inserted, it is huge and fills my canvas. I then tried to resize the picture by the handles but the picture does not look sharp and is kind of blurry. I tried cropping it but the picture is not sharp (looks kind of blurry).

I tried to open the same photo in a smaller canvas, 4 X 6, and the photo still came in huge, the same as when I was opening it up on a 12X12 canvas.

Someone suggested that it was perhaps the resolution...?!

If that is the case, what steps can I take to reduce the size of the picture while still keeping the sharpness so that I can scrap my photos to my heart's content?

I don't have a digital camera so a picture CD is as close to digital as I get right now....

Thank you all for your help. God Bless.

I'm not sure about DIP but in PSE you specify the dpi of the new document you create (canvas). Are you making it 300? The default for most programs is 72, so this would make your picture open up big in it since most prints are supposed to be 300 dpi. I just create a new document at 12x12 300 dpi and then drag my photo into it and it works. I also sometimes open up my pics on their own, resize them so that they are 300 dpi (vs the 72 they come up with) to see how big they will be and then resize/crop from there and don't see any reduction in quality. You will see reduction in quality if you leave it at 72 I think. I hope that helps you, picture CDs are great especially if you don't have a digital camera.

HI Kait
Two things to try and then get back to me

Firstly browse to your picture CD and right click on the photo you plan to use and choose Properties. Then click the Summary tab and the Advanced option. Here you shoudl be able to see information about your photo, including the resolution which should be at 300dpi both horizontal and vertical. PLease tell me what resolution your photos are at and what pixel size they are from that information.

Secondly..Create a new canvas at 12x12 then go to View advanced Options. Make sure that the Image size reads 12 x12, The pixel size reads 3600 x3600 and the resolution is set at 300dpi.
Select Done and then Done to apply those changes.

Thirdly, Open your image to your files area instead of inserting it. Go to File> Open and browse to find the photo and open it to your files area - do not insert it. Check that the photo is clear.( not fuzzy) and make a note how big the image is by using the rulers on the workspace. (If you cant see the rulers go to View> Rulers) Make a note of this measurement. This is the largest you can use the photo at before its quality will start to degrade.

Lastly, switch to your canvas and drag your photo onto it from the files area. mak esure you do not make the photo any larger than teh measurement you made before. If your photo was clear on teh previous step but now looks fuzzy to you, zoom in so that the photo fills the workspace and see if it is still fuzzy..it may just be your monitor stuggling with the smaller view.

If you are still having the same problem after all these steps please let me know and post the information i have requested above.

There are other variables such as the quality of your monitor and monitor settings too, but see how you go with the above.
