CD drive problems

I have been having no luck with this problem and thought maybe someone here could help. My computer is not recognizing my cd-rom or dvd drives. I've had them taken out and plugged back in. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, disabled, rebooted, downloaded drivers. I also paid $40 to HP for consulting and they couldn't figure it out. So before I spend a lot of money getting it fixed, if anyone has any tips for me, please let me know! I just burned most of my scrapping kits and photoshop extras to CD and now I can't use them. So sad!

Robin,

I asked my DH who knows about these things and he said you should check your BIOS setting to see if the BIOS is seeing the drives. If not, it could be that your IDE cable has been incorrectly connected to the motherboard. Also, you need to check your link settings on the drive (these are what tells it if it's a master or a slave unit.

If you use Windows it might also be worth checking out the FAQ section on their site.

Hope this makes more sense to you than it does to me .

If you need any clarification let me know and I'll pick his brains again.

Pam.

Can you be a bit more specific? Does the drive open/close when you press the button? Does the drive spin when you put a disc in but you get an error msg in windows?

If you are using XP.. and.. it the drive does open/close when the computer is on.. then I would suggest the following:

1) turn off computer and disconnect power cord and other wires (remember where they go!)
2) open the case and locate the CD drive.. you should see 3 wires connected to the drive:
a) a white cord with 4 wires attached (power supply)
b) a small cord with 2 wires attached (sound card connector)
c) a wide cable (IDE cable to motherboard)

3) You'll want to make sure all the wires are connected to the drive securely.. If they are, I would unplug the IDE cable to the drive and then restart the PC.. Windows will no uninstall the CD drivers, etc.

4) Once booted, shut down the PC and reattach the cables.. windows should reset the CD drive and tell you it found new hardware. If this does not occur, then there is a problem with the cable or the BIOS settings.

5) when you reboot the computer, hold down the F1 key (usually it is this key). This will take you to the BIOS.

6) There should be a menu of items listed.. one should list all drives avaialbel on your system. If your CD drive is there, great.. your BIOS is setup correctly and the problem lies elsewhere.. If your drive is not there, then you should see an auto detect option.. click that and see if it finds you drive. If not.. then you have an issue with the cable to your motherboard and that might require bringing the machine in for someone ot look at..

I assume the drive was working in the past?? Usually, this indicates a problem with the moterboard then... let me know what you find and I'll try to help further.. you can also send me a PM on this board... Good Lcuk

Wow...computer help.....if it isn't too much trouble can you maybe tell me why my printer won't download the printer driver....I get an error message that my printer is not responding....everything is correctly hooked up and it worked fine until my computer crashed and I had to reformat my system. HP has been unable to help me....I'm so frustrated I just might go out and buy the new Epson Stylus 1280 printer and forget about this little thing...but geeezzzzz, I can't even print ANYTHING...UGH!!!

If your dh doesn't mind, could you ask him for help.

THANKS SOOO MUCH!!

Gloria

Hi Gloria, what operating system are you using on your PC? And what type of printer do you have? It may help with whatever answers we can get for you
