You could do worse... but you can do better too! Try to find a Canon Canoscan 4400 - newegg has it for $80! It is the best scanner I have ever used and continues to be a workhorse for me. It too has the negative/slide attachment and it works wonders. For photos, just use the flatbed.. place as many photos as will fit with some room around them on the scanner and then scan it using photoshops amazing Batch Scan and Crop feature.. it will do a great job of cropping each photo from the scan and creating seperate files for each one! I used it to scan some photos for a client.. got through about 100 in an hour - about 5 at a time.

Anyway... save your money on the scanner and get the canon... Scanner technology has stalled and the "older" scanners (2-3yrs old) are really just as good as the newer ones with all the so called bells and whistles... they sound great on paper.. but in the end, you'll never use the extra features (how many times do you fax from your scanner??!?!).

Good Luck!

I am an Epson believer. Have loved every Epson scanner I've owned (3). Had to replace the first one because it got dropped, yep, dropped. The glass plate didn't survive. The second one got zapped when lightning struck my house and took out every electronic item in the house. Some things even a surge protector can't protect against. I now have the Epson Perfection 3170 Photo and love it. But if I HAD to buy a new one, the one you chose (Epson Perfection 4490) would be my choice.

pesto I called cannon and they said that they did not have a scanner that there scanners would only scan 35 mm film. I need to scan 110-120-126-35mm-slides ect. Epson is the only company that had a few options for the sizes that I needed.

80$ is a great deal especially if it is a really good printer... but it is not my money so ..... hehe I dont think they are going to buy mine online anyway. My guess is that they will hit the local puter shop. But I am not sure. I was just told to figure out what I want/need

And it says it come with some software that will be very helpful for me .... killing two birds with one stone.
