The person you spoke with must have been taking a lunch break because my scanner has a special lightbox that you slide in the negatives OR slides and then use it to scan in "photos". You can also buy these lightboxes for a few bucks and use them on any scanner... I know an HP I had came with the lightbox too... they work quite well but nothing beats a dedicated slide scanner.. if you have a ton of negatives/slides and want the best quality.. invest in one and then sell it used when done.

Sorry I think i confused myself. All of the company said that there scanners can do slides photos and 35mm it is the other size negative that they said they could not accommodate.

For irregular size negatives (ie: 2x3).. I'd take them someplace professional to be scanned. Remember, your negatives are all you have left of these old photos.... if handled incorrectly or exposed to harsh lighting, they can be easily destroyed. Depending on how many you have, it might be worth it to just have a pro do it rather than spend the hundreds on a dedicated slide scanner... Good luck!
