canon canoscan 4400 ?

I am new to scanning and just bought this scanner and really need help.......my ?'s are:
I am trying to scan B&W photos from a book (with permission, of course) and not getting good results. Not sure what DPI? to scan at, should I scan color or B&W? Do you always have to "clean them up" in a graphics program? They do not seem to be coming out clear and preise...or am I expecting too much? Thanks for any tips you can offer me

I have the 8400F, but these hints should help.
Scan at 600dpi with the output size being what you want to print them at.
Scan as a color photograph (convert later in your graphics program)
Save the file as a TIF if you can to preserve compression.

Basically, when I scan, I import into CS2 and do all adjustments there because I can zoom in to see better as well as make the tiniest adjustments.

The other thing to think about, is that the print quality of the book itself may not be the best, so you may have to clean up the scanned image to compensate.

I have the 500F
The only difference I do to Colleens is I scan in Greyscale - and i turn all the auto options off - like auto tone, auto sharpen etc.

Just a comment: scan b&w photos not in grayscale/b&w mode but colour (like all coloured fotos). This has as result more "depth" in colour, more tones, more everything... You can then work with it better in a graphics program. Is what I do
