I know it might be too late and for $30 it really worth buying a new scanner. But if you ever in need of some tech support, I had a similar problem like yours and I found a solution in a great tech support site.

Sorry again for the late reply, but this site I posted Fixya.com also have free live chat support. You can ask there, they have lots of experts and it work like messanger. Its a new service they just added. Worth a shot if you still have the old scanner, don't you think?
Just click on it from the home page and search for experts on scanners.
