External HD Help

I bought an external HD and case. I put it in the case and plugged it in. The light on the EHD is on. The "Safely Remove Hardware" icon is on the taskbar BUT it isn't showing up in My Computer so I can't use it. Does anyone know what the problem might be? TIA

Sometimes I have noticed that my EHD or jump drive won't show up in the My Computer window right way but if I close the window and wait until the computer has completely recognized the added hardware then reopen My Computer -the icon for the drive will be there. Also I recently had small portable EHD that was only two months old that woudn't show up sometime and some other problems. They figured it was faulty and replaced it. I sure learned my lesson- still have to backup to DVD's to play it safe. Hope you get it worked out. Is there an online support for your unit?

I had that same problem with mine, and my computer technician told me it was safe to turn it off as long as nothing is open from the EHD.

Is the problem you can't see the drive or that it shows up but you are afraid to remove it because you can't see the icon?

The icon itself is sort of a joke ... you can just turn it off or unplug it and nothing bad will happen.

If you can't see it.. then just keep trying. Some of the less quality EHD enclosures sometimes do this... I had one that I had to turn off/on about 10 times before it was recongnized... I have another that always hits on first try.. guess which one was the cheap one?!

Good luck!

The problem is I can't see the drive in My Computer so I can't even use it. The case is a Noontec Sunlite U235 for a 3.5" HD. The HD is a Seagate 160gig IDE. It turns on and I get the "safely remove" icon on the taskbar so the computer is recognising it's there. There's just no icon in My Computer.

The instructions were very basic to say the least. It totally omitted initialisation and formatting but it's up and running fine now.
