Yes.. canon 4400... if you can find one for under $40... grab it. $20 for a scanner isn't that outragous a find... the technology is so old hat these days that even a $20 one will give you great results... although it might take awhile to get a scan at 2400 dpi. Just be sure it has a fast USB connection, works with at least XP and has at least 2400dpi scanning abilities... if it has all that.. grab it!

I also have one from the Epson Perfection line and I love it. If you are concerned about quality, I would avoid an all-in-one. They tend to not devote enough specs to any one of it's functions.

Actually, many of the all=in-ones are quite decent these days... especailly for the scanner functions which are so advanced that even the lowest of low newer units will provide superb results.

For photo printing.. .I totally agree - they cannot compare to a dedicated unit.

Keep in mind most people scan in at 200 or 300 dpi... my scanner from 10 years ago maxed out at that resolution. The newer scannera allow scans of 16900 and more.. not many people are going to scan at that resolution because it would take about 20 hours to scan a 5x7 photo and the resulting file would be about 10 GB! I've used 1200 dpi for some retouching work and that's about as slow as I can take it... 1 hour to scan a small photo with file size around 1GB.. try working with that in Photoshop with 1GB of memory... not fun!

Well at least I am there with you! My scanner has days where it leaves "Bands" on my scanned images. Then other weeks it will work fine!! It is a HP Scanjet 4670, love how I can take the glass top off and say scan a wall, carpet, bedspreads and such! But hate the BANDS!!
I did check into this and it seems to be a common issue with this particular scanner.

Mine is a lexmark z82... Supper old as far as printers go... It hates windows xp... Has not worked right since the day I got the puter. I sort of have to trick it into doing what I want ... but for Now it is what i have and I can deal with that.

Not to be critical.. but it is not XP that's the problem.. more than likely its your super old lexmark that doesn't have upgraded drivers to support the new OS. Time to do an upgrade... $40 gets you a truly nice printer or scanner these days. I just helped someone get a Canon printer at staples for $50 after rebate.. even uses the pigment inks and prints super fast!
