Okay... I am kinda awake (still having first cup of coffee). Before we run a defrag, I think dh runs a checkdisk command, but it could be scandisk too. All i remember at this point, is that it is run from the DOS command prompt. Sorry, still waking up.

Anyways... you want to first check your HD for bad spots, then run a defrag. You need to be sure your HD is healthy before the defrag. The process doesn't happen immediately, but if it hangs, then something is wrong.

If you need a link for a serious anti-virus/spyware scan, just let me know. DH is just a blackberry away, so I can also ask him specific questions if you have any. Off to drink a pot of coffee to try and fully wake up now.

ok,
I did a search at DST for defrag and found Ernie's program that she uses...installed it...cleaned out just about everything on my computer except programs first. then ran the defrag...it told me I was in serious trouble (like I didn't know)
anyway, I noticed alot of the files it was moving were temp photoshop files? so I did a search...
deleted them and I have 83% space on my hard drive now...hahahahaha
so I know to check this now...don't knwo why it is doing that on my desktop, looked on my laptop and there are no files like that...but my laptop is newer than my desktop
woo hoo...thank you all for your wonderful help...and I'll be buying that program Ernie..

We had a problem a couple years ago that was similar to this. The computer would not finish the defrag, it would stop part way through. It turned out that it was a virus on the computer that prevented my hard drive from defraging. I installed an newer virus scan program and ran it and it found the virus and removed it an then my computer ran fine.

Ohhhhh... I hate those temporary files! If you lock up while working in PS, the temp files just sit there until you manually delete the little critters.

Great!! I love it. Glad it was helpful to you. Now you'll always have a shiny, clean hard drive (well, depending on the websites you visit .)

Too funny Brenda... but you know what? I now check my "scratch disk" drive each time I close my CS, as well as a few times while I am working. I have learned the size limit, and stay within a certain range to avoid crashes. Crash = huge temp PS file + arti banging head against the wall for not saving changes in file sooner.
