Finally got mobile!!!!

Yay!!! Got a new laptop yesterday. I can't wait to be able to sit somewhere comfy and scrapbook instead of being traped at the computer desk. Only thing it has all this stuff that I don't know if I need or want, never had before but all this ASUS stuff cause thats the make. Any one got one ASUSF3Jc AP105M Notebook. It says it has internal modem, does this mean I don't need my old modem? Can anyone help???

I don't know much..but if you have alot of those shortcut icons on your desktop. Verify that they are shortcuts to internet sites where they want you to purchase a program. They are like built in commericals on your brand new computer!
You can safely delete those.

I would do a quick look in your Add/Remove Programs to see what is actually installed on your computer!

I'm so jealous! I want a laptop big time! My husband doesn't want me to have one, he says I spend too much time on the computer as it is and if I went mobile, he would never see me without a computer. And he's right. But I still want one.

If you have an internal modem and you use dial-up, then yes, you don't need your external one any longer. Just plug the phone cord right into your modem (not the ethernet jack!) and you are good to go.

Tracey is right on about all those desktop icons... you can uninstall anything on there that is a trial (famous use by computer manufactures_). In fact, the first thing I do for someone if they do buy a new PC from a large company... is to wipe the hard drive clean and do a fresh reinstall of XP. This way, they are starting with a totally clean drive without a ton of stuff poluting their HD and registry.. but, at least uninstalling the useless stuff will get you right along as well.

Congrats.. ASUS is a great company - glad you gave them a shot over the usual suspects!

Thanks for that Pesto126. I'm on broadband so looks like I'll be forking out for a wireless router. I chose ASUS because everyone I spoke to recommended them and they seemed to have better specs for the money. I paid $1700AUS about $1300US for 120gig HDD with 1gig RAM and Core 2 Duo. Acer was the only other company that came close but ASUS got a better rap from everyone and they give a great 2 year warranty. I am very happy so far!!

Glad to hear you are happy... I've used ASUS motherboards and video cards for many years to build PC's from scratch and they are a great company!

Yes - you would need the wireless router if you want to go unplugged - if you don't mind a cord, you could just go right into any CAT5 plug into the laptop as well. But the freedom you have with wireless is quite nice and truly compliments the laptop mobility as well.

Good luck!
