Your latest dual core Athlon with 3 GB of ram will be outdated in a few days like you say.. but will be performing well for years and years (like her celeron has for a long time I bet).
I have only had my laptop for about 14 months so it is not that old... Granted, I knew absoulutely nothing about computers when I bought it and it has performed very well for what I have needed it for...basically surfing the net and e-mailing. Now that I am learning about digital scrapbooking, I am learning more about computers and realizing just how my computer is lacking. Unfortunately, there is no way my husband is going to go for getting me another computer so I am hopeing that adding memory will suffice for now... I really do want to learn how to digiscrap. I have found for now that if I lower the dpi and the size, my computer runs fast enough for me to practice & start to learn how to use PSPX.

yeah.. unfortunately, you bought a laptop with low specs so even though it is relatively new (just over a year), it was about 2 years outdated when you purchased it.

The memory should help to an extent.. lowering the dpi and size, avoiding the use of too many layers (especially adjustment layers) and (although I hate to say it) flattening your files after the initial adjustments and using a jpg instead of a tiff or PSD will help as well.

I had/have trouble too

I always had trouble running my PSP and AS programs. When I ordered my new computer from Dell, I had it specially made for using these programs.
I had them put in the fastest CPU available, 4gb of ram, andd 500gb of C harddrive. I have two extra 250gb external hard drives. One for keeping my programs on, and one for all the pictures of grandkids and family.
Still, PSP takes all the strength my computer has. It will freeze if I have several other windows open. It is awful to be in the middle of some work and have it freeze. You can't even save what you have done cause nothing works.
Don't give up. Adding more ram will help you a lot. But, eventually, you will have to have better CPU.
Hope this helps,
Sandy aka mamawsandy

PSP in the latest incarnation is a real dog... Corel took a great product and loaded it up with tons of problems and memory leaks.. but still.. you shouldn't have THAT much trouble with 4GB of ram. Just curious.. when you say you use an external drive for "keeping all your programs on".. what do you mean? Do you install your programs to your external drive?? If so.. that is a huge no-no... how are the drives attached to your PC - USB? USB is way slower than internal SATA.. here are some comparison numbers to give you an idea.. could be the source of your slowness if indeed PSP is running from an external drive:
* USB 1.1 – 15 Mbps
* FireWire (1394a) – 400 Mbps
* USB 2.0 – 480 Mbps
* FireWire 800 (1394b) – 800 Mpbs
* SATA 1.5 – 1.5 Gbps
* SATA 3.0 – 3.0 Gbps

As you can see.. using the latest SATA drives are more than 7 times faster than usinng the latest USB..

You should be OK with your CPU - just OK, not great.

Upgrading your RAM will significantly help. 256 is barely enough to run Windows XP efficiently. Upgrading to 1 gig will help you tremendously.

Make sure you are shopping for the correct type of RAM if you are doing it yourself. You should be able to go to crucial.com and check to see what type of RAM you need. It is a simple thing - easier if you had a desktop, but not impossible to do with a laptop either.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful replies. I did indeed add 1 gig of RAM and it has fixed my problem!!!! YEAH!!! I am sure since my computer is so out of date, it could probably run much faster but at least the program works now and I have done my first couple of layouts so I am on my way to digital scrapbooking....

FYI...I did use the crucial.com site to figure out what kind of RAM I needed (I had no idea that there were different kinds...) and then I found step-by-step instructions on the Gateway Web Site (with pics) on how to install the memory in my laptop. Installation was as easy as putting batteries in my kids toys. I can't believe the Geek Squad at Best Buy was going to charge me $40 to install the memory and I was going to pay it....

I have learned so much on this board already and I am sure to learn much more but I do want to thank everyone for their great replies. It has helped me tremendously....
