Organizing external hard drive

I have just got an external hdd to store all kits and photos on. Does anyone have any organizing tips to keep everything easy to find? This has really freed up the HDD space on my puter and hopefully extended it's life a bit but everything is in one file at the moment and I really want to do something about it but don't know where to start. Also does anyone know if you can recover something that I put on a CD and now the CD won't open in my drive? It makes a strange noise when i try to use it. Other CD's work fine. Any ideas????

First, set up partitions on the new drive if you can. I have mine split into photos, albums (completed pages), downloaded kits, and kits I am making. Since each partition will show up as a drive letter, it just makes it easier to keep tidy.

Photos and completed layouts can be sorted into a folder for each year, and a subfolder for months (again to keep it tidy). For kits I download, I have a folder for things i purchased, chatroom freebies and creative team kits (plus a few others). From that point, I group into the week of the chatroom freebie (since they all match here for the whole week) and into designer subfolders for the paid/CT kits.

As for the CD, i will ask DH when he gets home from the computer service call he is doing right now.

Thanks Colleen, I will try and find out about the partitions, your set-up sounds great just what I need.

I have had casue to use a program - its free called CDCheck that worked for me - might be worth a go http://www.kvipu.com/CDCheck/
As for organising, there are plenty of suggestions in this article http://scrapbook-bytes.com/cgi-scrip...icle_292.shtml

ACDSee is proving to be an incredibly useful organisation program for digiscrappers too you can read more about that here:
