Scanner

I am trying to decide on a scanner and I am having trouble. I have tons of slides, negs and pictures to scan for my dad. I am looking for a scanner that will scan all of this and do a few at a time. Do you know of any reasonably priced scanner that will scan multiple negs and slides plus some kind of document feeder for stacks of 4x6 pictures. But must also scan at a good dpi. Whatever that means! My fear is having to scan all this one by one. Thanks for your advice. Nik

The scanner to get for you is the Canon 4200.... for $80, you can a very quick and good scanner that will scan slides and of course photos. The driver is fantastic, making quick work of prints and slides. To do the prints, I highly recommend using Photoshop CS2 if you have a copy..... they have a batch function that automatcially creates individual photos from a group of photos on the scanner... just place the photos on the scanner with some room around each one, use the batch fucntion and voila.. the photos are straightened, made into seperate files and ready for you to tweak and save.

Can't beat the price and function on this baby... good lcuk!

I'm posting to reinforce Pesto's comment about having software that takes multiple scanned photos and crops, straightens, and separates them into individual images being a HUGE timesaver. I saved myself a tremendous amount of the time from previous efforts using this feature (with Photoshop CS at the time). If you don't already own Photoshop CS (or CS 2), it is a bit steep of a price if you just need this one feature, though. Fortunately, Photoshop Elements 4 also has this feature and is much less expensive.

HTH,

My Canon Scanner has this feature built in (multi scan) but I wouldnt recommend it as it doenst have a bulit in negative scanner - its a plugin type arrangement - Look for a scanner that has the negative/slide scanner built in to the scanner itself.

Try www.scantips.com for some great information on scanners and what to look for

My other scanner - a HP - has an addon attachment and it works great for slides and negatives.. just plug it in the back and hit the scan button. I'm not sure if the built in ones are better or not since both scanners provide the same results... the HP cost me 3x the canon though and the canon is just as good (and actually better thanks to the awesome driver - the HP driver is mediocre at best).

I have the CanoScan 8400F by Canon, and am really pleased with the results with negatives. Picked up this model since I have the older 120/620 type negatives to scan as well, and I was able to get an extended warranty on the scanner (I wear them out quickly with the amount of scanning I do). My other choice when I was shopping was an Epson with the same scanning capabilities. Good luck in finding the one to fit your needs!

I didnt clarify well, the scanner is great but its incredibly fiddly to set up the negative/slide scanner attachement. SInce you are talking about scanning a lot of negatives etc, then I think a scanner with a built in unit - rather than one you have to plug in and set up. would be a better option

Got ya.. It is much easier to use one with a built in unit.. although, the whole process is a bit time consuming. A dedicated negative scanner costs thousands of dollars for this very reason but is a must if you are scanning in thousands of negative strips..

just in case you still need one.. more postive reviews for the 4200 canoscan... http://www.shopping.com/xPR-CANOSCAN...D-211063967364
