Computer: Dual Processing Core

Have anyone gotten a new computer with the dual processing core? If so, have you noticed any difference in proformance when you use PSCS?

My laptop died over the weekend and I'm looking for a new desktop. I was never very mobile with my 17" laptop; especially since it was always looked up to an EHD.

Thank you in advance.

I have an HP 7360 (desktop) with dual core and LOVE IT!!! I use PSCS and it just flies when I open it. I also have PSCS on my laptop (an HP as well, but not dual core) and it takes longer to load and doesn't process things as fast as my desktop. Granted, RAM has a lot to do with it, but I love the speed of everything on the desktop. If it's in your budget to get one, I'd highly recommend it. It's quiet also, we forget it's on most of the time!

How many gb of RAM did you get? I'm going to have HP or Dell custom build - I want to put in 4gb but DH thinks I should only get 2gb and see how it runs since I only had 2gb on my now dead laptop and it was OK..

Thank you!

It's got 2gb RAM - works great compared to the laptop with 512mb! Ours has Windows Media Center also, but we've never used that feature. Why watch tv on the 19" monitor when we can watch it on a big screen tv?! Ours wasn't a custom built one, we got it a few months back at Best Buy for about $1400 or so, I can't remember exactly how much it was since we bought other things as well at the same time. But I know we had a bunch of nice rebates!

Thank you for all your help Flower Power. Hopefully, DH will take me to Best Buy tomorrow to help me decide AMD vs Intel. I looked up your unit and it does have the dedicated graphic card that is a must for me. So, if I'm lucky I may have a computer again!

Thanks for reminding about Best Buy. They are so much closer to me but I always think Fry's....I guess their daily ad in the paper is working...LOL!

Wait.. !! don't do it... please please do not buy PC equipment at a store like Best Buy. You are so much better off ordering it online... especially a Desktop computer! Firstly, you'll save $$$$ and secondly, you'll get much much better components.

Case in point.. I found a laptop in BJ's for my mom that looked great... nice specs and all it was $799. Being who I am.. I checked around online and found the exact same spec'd machine at Dell for $499...... I found 3 others for $525 at various other places..

Some other points.. Dual Core is overhyped... you can save some money and just put in a Athlon 64 3.0 CPU.

2GB is more than enough memory for photoshop on a new PC. You are much better off spending the add'l $$ on a good quality set of hard drives... you want a speedy system - get WD Raptor drives. You'll find the system is much faster than the extra 2GB of memory will provide (beside which only PS will even use it... most other programs just arent' designed or need more than 1GB of memory).

The reason things take longer to load on various systems has little to do with 2GB vs 4GB o f memory and more to do with your system as a whole. A new computer zips around because: a) you HD is not fragmented b) you don't have a ton of programs loaded in c) you don't ahve zillions of dll's moving into memory on startup d) no viruses/adware/spyware

I cringe everytime I hear someone want to buy a system in a store.. look around online and you'll see what I mean. That $1500 system can easily be had online for around $1000... check out xpbargains.com and go to Dell section and just follow the links. Good Luck!!!!

My tech recommends Toshiba. (He fixes a lot of Dells.) Frankly, I think either is good. I still have our old Pentium 1 Toshiba laptop and other than it's outdated and under capacity, it's still going strong. No problems with it except one virus issue a couple years ago...but that's not the laptops fault.

I upgraded my graphics processor on my new laptop and I don't have to wait for anything...1.5 M RAM, dual core. I also have a 19" flat screen monitor I use when I'm at the desk, along with a Wacom Graphire4 tablet.

Just get the most that you can afford. Digital files, photos, and elements seem to multiply. My next investment is an external Hard Drive. I've found running PSE4 on my new computer to be a joy.

Good luck....and enjoy!

Thanks Pesto & Art-C for your response. I had gone to Best Buy earlier in the week and they didn't have the graphic card that I wanted so I'm just going to order on-line; especially, since a lot of them are offering free shipping.

Thank you again
