Question External HD suggestions/recommendations

My computer is slowing down noticably. I think it would help if I stored my pictures and especially all my kids downloaded music on an external HD. Do you think this would help? I am planning on buying more memory for my computer, but I am waiting for a trip down to the US where I can pick it up for 60% less than I would pay for it here in Canada! ( have a Dell which uses expensive RD RAM). Any recommendations on size, brand etc?
Thanks in advance!

I would stick with the big name brands. I thought I was getting a deal when Fry's was clearing out all of these IOGear EHD ( I think it came out to be 35 cents/gig) and 4 months later, it died.

Most definately - to run efficiently your computers hard drive should never be more than 2/3 full. So if you are above that then removing some of that will make a differenece to your system. You do get what you pay for so stick to well known brands for external memory units and have a bit of a look at reviews for brands before you go ahead and by one. I chose seagate after a look around.
Having said that if iyour drive is still only half full or so you arent going to see much of a difference. In that case what you need is more RAM rather than physical memory - a GB iwll make a big difference - more if you can afford it. Just check how much your computer can take.
