Question Printing and binding for 10"x10" book

Does anyone know of a company that can print a bind a book with pages that are designed to be 10"x10" ? I know that fastbackbooks.com can do this, but the .pdf format that they need the pages to be submitted in is causing me a ton of trouble and frustration.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi...

If youa re using Photoshop the PDF is easy to do....I highly recommend Fastback....so let me know if you use PS and I can post instructions on how to do it for them....

Not aware of any other 10x10's out there....most are 8x8 or 12x12....

Hey Jill - I would love instructions for Fastback - the PDF file is very intimidating.

Just an FYI..the instructions I can give are only for PS CS....if you have any other program I think you will need either a full version of Adobe Acrobat or Illustrator to create the PDF...

I will get the instructions up in a little bit!

OK..Hopefully I can explain this very easy...when submitting a book to FASTBACK, here is how to do it...when you create a page here it is step by step...(I would recommend making a template page so that you can use it without have to redo these steps...) Let's take an 8x8 book as an example...you want to create 20 layouts to put in your book....

1) Create a 8.25 x 8.25 canvas (always need a .25 inch bleed...that would be .125 on all 4 sides of the page...you can use the guides tool to create guides at .125 and 8.125 both vertically and horizaontally to see your "bleed area".

2) You need to put crop marks in the file, so using your guides as a tool, use the line tool to create a black crop mark at the point where the lines intersect to the ends of the page...(see sample in gallery I posted today...the RED little areas in the corner are the crop marks...they should remain in the file...but make sure you remove the guides before sending to print!)

3) This is where I would recommend saving your file as a template for future use so you do not have to recreate the crops..

4)Create your layout, make sure you do not include any pertinent information past your guides...this is where your page will be cut.....create all of your pages and keep them in one folder

5) When all your pages are done....(this part is only relevant to PS CS) you can go to File Browser...go to the folder where all of your layouts are...then go to Automate, PSD file...a box will come up that should show all the files in the folder then just follow the prompts..
when it is complete you should have a separate folder with 1 PSD file of all 20 of your layouts in it.

Make sure all of your layouts are created at 300DPI......If you want a cover picture you need to create that as a separate PSD file....

I hope this is somehwat clear....as usual, you know you can ask questions...I will try to help the best I can....Fastback is a great company and it would be worth it to learn this to use them....their pricing, customer service and products are all great....

Wow, I'm very interested in finding out more. I have heard all the talk about printing a coffee table book and was thinking it would be a great way to do an album of my childhood. That way a book could be printed for my brother and parents as well. I checked out the fastback site and it looks great, but yes a little intimidating. I saved your directions Jill for creating a PDF for future use. Thanks. Can anyone answer these other questions for me?
1. What is the actual cost of the book, I saw $38 but that doesn't include a cover? and that said 20 pages but they suggest you do 36 at least? Is this right?
2. What is the cost of a second publication, I saw it was a reduced cost, but no amount was given?
3. Do you get them printed on both sides of the paper and is the paper too thin? (Can you see the other side through it?)
4. Do you have to do a bleed if you do 10x10? I saw they suggested it for 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 and for 8 1/2 by 11.
5. Final question (I think) They say they want tiffs but if you do your own design work to send a PDF. I've got the directions for doing this, but do you have to create your pages and save them as tiffs first, then put them together into one document? I've always saved everything and printed everything as JPEGS so I was just curious about this.

Thanks for any info anyone wants to pass on.

To answer the above questions...

1. What is the actual cost of the book, I saw $38 but that doesn't include a cover? and that said 20 pages but they suggest you do 36 at least? Is this right?
The book for 8.5x11 and smaller is 38 (although the 8.5 x 11 would be without a full bleed..they bill higher if it has a bleed in it)..a cover image is 1.50, or you can do a dust jacket or some other cool things for an additional cost...it is all listed on the site....Thye do suggest 36 pages and it does fill the book out better and seems to make the binding a little more secure...but I have done 20 woth no problems....

2. What is the cost of a second publication, I saw it was a reduced cost, but no amount was given? cannot remember this on offhand...maybe 10 or 15%.....?!?!?! DOn't quote me on that though....
3. Do you get them printed on both sides of the paper and is the paper too thin? (Can you see the other side through it?)
You can do one sided or 2 sided print....they print standard on 2 sides and the paper is thick so no problems there....and I do a LOT of dark backgrounds and have never had an issue...
4. Do you have to do a bleed if you do 10x10? I saw they suggested it for 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 and for 8 1/2 by 11.
You do not have to do a bleed in any size...I have actually done a few 8.5x11 books without a full bleed (just to save costs b/c it does cost a few dollars more for full bleed in the larger sizes)...it leaves a white border around the page and it really looks good...it just depends on the look you like...
5. Final question (I think) They say they want tiffs but if you do your own design work to send a PDF. I've got the directions for doing this, but do you have to create your pages and save them as tiffs first, then put them together into one document? I've always saved everything and printed everything as JPEGS so I was just curious about this.
No need to save as TIFF if you are doing the PSD file...they only want TIFF files if THEY are going to be doing any of the layout for you...they just want the PSD file.....

HTH!!!

Thanks Jill!

Jill,

Thanks for all this valuable information. I am using PSE 3 so it I could not make all my pages into 1pdf file (from what I understand, I can only make each individual page into a pdf. I can't create 1 file with 32 ind. pages). Anyhow, my husband does have Adobe Acrobat on his computer so I'm transferring my files to his computer to make the single file. Whew! Thanks again for all the help!
