External HD or External Enclosure.. anyone?

Just wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with external hard drives?

I would like to convert the one I have (120gb) to an external since we are upgrading to 2 new HD anyway.
I was hoping I could just buy a external enclosure to do this since it is only about $46 to do so.
This was discussed in one of our chats so hoping the geek patrol will help me

YES.. I can give you the thumbs up on this approach! I have 3 of these drives that I use for backup and swapping items back and forth between the office/home. With a USB2.0 hookup, they are very fast and are soo simple to put togther. I recommend buying one from www.newegg.com. I have the a Nexstar and can say that it is very good for $30.. Some do get hot very quickly because there are no fans. If you have an extra laptop HD, then you can get a smaller, lighter and cooler 2.5" model.. these don't even need an external power supply..!

Anyway.. I can recommend it.. for $30, you just can't go wrong. Much cheaper than buying a standalone unit for $80+

external and internal...

yes i run several externals also just make sure they are kept cool . but also back up your files that are really really important . as hard drives always crash no matter if they are external or internal so any scrapbooking stuff i have is backed up on cd's or dvds and then put in a safe place .

Yes.. one with a fan would help.. but most do not have fans. If you are concerned about heat, then I would recommend you buy a cheap laptop HD and the smaller enclosure. No power supply needed since it runs off the USB port and the smaller HD's run more efficiently since they are meant for power hungry laptops (where heat is a big no no..)
