Well.. you might want to check out The Gimp.. its free and has many photoshop features. Also, I really like Xnview deluxe... not free... but feature packed photo touchup, etc. Of course.. PSP is the bomb for paiting and photo manip.. and scrapbooking.

For font creation.. you need specialized tools.. try fontifier, or font creator..

animated gif... type gif animator or anigif.

Good luck.

Software

I really like Photoshop for photos. I know there are many others and it's a preference thing too but with Photoshop I have been able to do what I need to do. I have Macromedia Fireworks also. It's a nice program but I think Photoshop does more for me.

I'm not a big fan of gif animations... I like Flash (I'm a web developer... that's why I'm more into Flash than animated gifs) better so I am a big fan of Macromedia Flash. If you want to create flash images but want a simpler software to use, try Swish. But, here's a software that is pretty affordable and can create gif images.

Fonts... I just download them... they seem too time consuming and I can easily download what I need somewhere from the net. But here's some material that can help you make your decision: http://desktoppub.about.com/od/fonteditors/. Maybe later when my daughter is older and I graduate next Spring I'll have more time to play with fonts.

I agree with the above.. fonts are found free.. just search and download as you please. I too love PS.. but it is costly and to be honest.. you can save a bundle by using alternatives such as Jasc PSP and a number of good quality freeware products. Look at Tucows and download.com for shareware/freeware options.

I currently have about 5 paint programs loaded on my main PC.. photoshop, PSP, elements, Xnview Deluxe and Corel Painter X. I use each a bit when I need to do something really special but mainly use PSP believe it or not.

its all a matter of how much $$$ you want to spend on software. If you have $600 or so to spend, then by all means buy photoshop CS. You can basically do it all with the software and you'll be all set for years to come. If you only have $100, buy PSP.. personally, I think it is just as good as photoshop. If you don't want to spend any $$, I would recommend a freeware editor like The Gimp. Or.. you could go the trail route for over a year. Most of the software companies offer 30 day free trials of their software.. use it for a month, uninstall and move on to the next company. I've done this in the past and basically scapped for free with some very nice software (in fact, the font editor I'm using now is a trial version and costs over $400!). You can basically just bounce from software to software.. find one you really really like and maybe buy it. Good luck!

If you decide to purchase PSP it also comes with Animation Shop for no extra $$$, either on the CD or download is available from Corel.
PSP's digital camera noise reduction is GREAT, for fixing up those photo's!
