Will not matter.. believe me. Buy a cheap <$100 scanner from www.newegg.com and you'll be just fine. Again.. the ONLY thing to consider is if you need a slide/negative attachment.. if you are only interested in scanning in photos, ANY cheap scanner that has a resolution >600dpi will be fine.. my experiences anyway..

I was looking for a new scanner recently and saw an Epson on Amazon.com that had an attachment for 4x6 photos - you stack a bunch in the attachment, tell the software where to store the images and how to name them, then start it and leave it! One user said he kept adding photos to the stack and it didn't have any problems. That really sounded neat since I have boxes and boxes of old photos to scan! I couldn't find one locally though and needed a scanner immediately for something else, so I bought the Epson 4180. It's quick and separates photos, but doesn't come with the attachment the one on amazon has. But I still like the idea of scanning a stack of photos at once, without having to keep putting pictures on the scanner bed!

Yes.. this is a nice feature.. but you do realize you can scan 6 or so pictures at once and have them auto-saved as seperate files via photoshop? Its very easy and quite convenient.. just scan a set and save as a single file, load it up in photoshop and use one of the actions to bust them apart and save as indivisual.. it even straightens ones that are crooked on the scanner.. I can provide exact steps if no one is aware of this free feature.

I do love that CS feature! It's easier for me now, though, with my scanner separating them. It's in the File-Automate menu, under Crop and Straighten photos. My only issue is sometimes it would take a scanned image of 3 photos and crop them into 8 images! It had a hard time sometimes differentiating between the space between the photos and anything that color on the photo itself. But that was rare to occur. My Epson sometimes does this also, then I have to manually crop. I only wish my scanner bed was bigger, I can only fit 4 of the 4x6 photos at once!

Yes.. that's the one.. file - automate. I imagine the color needs to be different to balance things correctly.. but I've not run into a single problem since using this feature.. just thought I'd pass along since it isn't well documented anywhere.

I have to get a scanner that can scan slides and negatives, too. I'm worried that scanning a slide will look bad when you enlarge it to 8x10 or so. Any comments on this??

Thanks, Sheryl

Umm. try it. I think you will find it looks ok.. if not - most quality camera stores have a slide scanner/printer in store. Not sure how much it costs per print.. but it is an option should you not like the resutls.. but if you have the hardware already.. just give it a go!
