I'm buying a new computer and what I can't decide on is the monitor.

I'd like to buy a Flatscreen LCD but I have misgivings. Any advice?

Hello,

Whenever I need to purchase new hardware I always check Tom's Hardware. He has specific guides for each type of hardware and also reviews various brands and models.

Good Luck!

Hi,
I personally spent a lot of time getting my new computer and my monitor because I work all day on the internet and in Photoshop with graphics. The monitor was very, very important to me, too.
I can give you my experience... first I bought a 19" Flat Screen Samsung , first LCD I ever owned, I had a hard time adjusting to the difference in quality of the graphics especially on the internet. Most people would tell me it was the same as CRT but I did not find that to be true with my eyes. But I am very glad I tried it out with a full 14 day return policy with Best Buy. The CRT gives me much better color and picture quality than the LCD... I don't understand all the tech talk, but I know what my eyes like to work with.
I found out that ViewSonic carried a Monitor made just for Graphic work! I was shocked because I never saw anything like that in the stores. That was because it is not carried in the stores! They are larger and bulky, but the screen is great! I got the largest one which was 21" through amazon.com for around $450.00 with FREE shipping!!! It got to me in just 2 days! They also gave me a 14day return policy so I wasn't scard about giving it a trial run. But, no worries here, it has stayed on my desk ever since. I don't care about the space it takes up because the view and quality of the images I am working on is so great. My recommendation is to take advantage of return policies! Try out the screens and see what your eyes like.

This is what I stayed with...I love it!!!

I would go with a CRT over a flatscreen as they offer better resolution when dealing with graphics.

The reason we finally got our flatscreen is because they're freaking tiny! Whereas our old monitor covered 80% of the computer desk, now there's room for us to pile junk there. (Ideally, that will be replaced with useful stuff once I get another urge to clean the house...)

CRTs also have something called a "refresh rate" which is how often the little ray gun paints the picture - that's what gives you a headache if you sit at one too long. LCDs don't work the same way, so they're easier on the eyes. Just be sure to have the monitor set to the actual resolution of the LCD, otherwise you will have a very fuzzy monitor. I'm not sure what Mom2EllaRose means by "better resolution" on CRTs - maybe higher? Higher resolutions above 100dpi aren't necessarily better, especially with aging eyes, basically after 100dpi you're squinting or running at non-native resolution and losing the crispness of an LCD.

All the high end Apple displays are LCDs, and that's what graphics professionals use

Well when I bought my monitor I didn't do any research lol. I just went to the store and looked until I found one that was beautiful to look at inside and out. I ended up with a NEC Multisync LCD 1765 - really intended for gamers, but it's a beauty. Only later did I realize that it might be a problem because it "sees" so much better than others that some of the design nuance that I add to my creations might be less noticable because most people don't have this detailed of a monitor. So while its a purdy thing it's not necessarily the best choice for me. My point? Kudos to you for asking before you buy lol and I would go to a few different sources, tell the sales folks what you will be using it for (graphic design) and see what they say. Let us know where you land!

I have a 19" Flat Screen CRT by KDS XF-9bi. It ran about $97.00 after rebates through office depot. This is what I have on my imaging station. Very pleased with it.

On the internet machine I have a KDS Flat Panel LCD KDS7si. Itran about $200 after rebates. The flat panel for the internet is great but I've tried doing Photoshop work on it and it never looks like it should.

I use the CRT for all my photoshop work. The Flat Panel LCD just doesn't make it for serious and detailed Photoshop work. The resolution and clarity on the the CRT is just so much better for imaging.

Calibrating LCDs?

OMG, I'm so glad I saw this thread!

I'm about to cry! My 21" monitor just died, so I have to buy a new one.

I've always read that LCD's are much harder to calibrate than CRT monitors, and they aren't as color accurate. However, LCD's are taking over the market, and I'm not seeing any good deals on 20"+ size CRT monitors.

Have any of your calibrated your LCD (flat panels) with good results?

THANKS!
