LCD screens (and tvs for that matter, although not as bad) tend to have problems with "ghosting" which means that when you move something (like your mouse) you get an effect of a "ghost" mouse following you where you are going. Some of the brands have fixed this to a great extent, but it is still there at times. Also, LCD screens tend to have more problems with burning out and cost more to repair than typical screens. Definately read reviews of whatever you plan on buying because some work great and others do not.
My DH is buying a flat screen LCD eventually, but I am not sure which one he has decided on (I am not sure if he actually has decided on one for sure). I will ask him and let you know.

Ghosting is only a real problem when you are playing 3D FPS shooter games... not scrapbooking.. and most of the newer quality LCD's are < 16ms and will not have that problem. I just bought a 17" Samsung from Newegg (the BEST place to buy computer stuff BTW) for like $240 after rebate.. this monitor has a 12ms response time and is perfect. If you are realllllyyy concerned about ghosting.. then choose an 8ms like the viewsonic 19".. but expect to pay $375.. Stay away from 25ms response time specials.. if the price is too good to be true.. then please check the respone time. 25ms IS a problem.

LCDs are brighter, offer truer color and take up no space.. crt's are great if you have the desk space..

Oh.. and 17" LCD's run a native resolution of 1280x1024.. if you really go any higher on the resolution on a 17" montior.. you won't be able to see it! I mean.. resolution is just fine.

Tomshardware is a good site for review info.. good luck with your purchase! Later.

Monitor

I agree with Presto, you won't see any ghosting if you're just scrapbooking.

As for brands, I like Viewsonic and Samsung alot. I do though rather have a CRT than an LCD if I have the desk space. I am a web developer... and designer... and when I switched to LCDs I could see some big differences. Currently I have two 19" monitors so that I can multiple software open at the same time and not have to move program windows around too much. When I had the CRT, everything was great. After getting the LCD my left and right screen will not match up in contrast, brightness, or color. So I can make some really cool looking graphics on my right screen and when I try to put everything together on my left screen it looks like crap. Later I found that my right screen is more accurate than my left so I just left it to that. I have a laptop and a Macintosh (with two CRTs) to test my final results and usually the graphics turn out ok - like my right screen.
