Umm.. ok $2/ print. but you're not factoring in the: Price of the printer, and depreciation of the hardware. Given an initial starting price of $500.. + a per print cost of $2... I'd say printing 30 layouts a year at $6/ is certainly a better way to go. Winkflash will print 10x13 for $4.50 each... Very very expensive printer.. now in 2 years.... when the printer is $200... but then another one will be out that everyone wants.. oh well.. to each their own.

One reason I really wanted to have a nice photo printer at home is so I could print on specialty media types -- 100% cotton rag paper or injket printable CD's, for example. It just depends on what your priorities are. For a lot of people, the convenience and instant turn-around are big factors, too. I also like having more control over the printing process so I can tweak my prints to look just how I want. There are pro's and con's to both sides, but you're right -- to each his own .

And the cost per printed 12x12 layout is typically under $2 a page (cost of the inks and paper) assuming you print on both sides of the paper (the scrapbook paper is double sided). I haven't seen an online store that can come anywhere close to that in price or quality...

where i get mine printed online it is $1.45AUD for an 8x12 and $5.50AUD per 12x12. Their quality is excellent and you have no other costs to factor in, like in refills, service on your machine, purchase of the machine, depreciation, and of course, when the newer more new-beaut-i-make-you-breakfast-in-bed-as-well-printer comes out, you won't be sitting there thinking... i should have waited.
we have a very basic bubblejet printer, that are so cheap to buy, instead of buying refills, we buy a new printer. (Between $39 and $59AUD) but for quality prints that will last, you cannot surpass a dye sublimation printer and thats what you get from a professional printer.

Sorry - I was wrong!! Just pulled mine out and they are 8x10, not 8.5x11. No idea why this machine doesn't support letter sized paper (it does do A4) since all of our others do. Sorry about that!!!

Actually, the refills were figured into that price. The layout that we have tested costs 1.75 to print one side - that figure includes the price of the inks and the paper (buying at full retail). It was tested on the 2200, which uses the UltraChrome pigment inks as well, but it is a different ink set from the 1800.
And I'd be the last one to argue with you that printer technology is always changing (there were plenty of people were kicking themselves this weekend because they had just bought the R800, and now want the 1800). Our wide-format printers seem to have an average lifespan of about 3-5 years. I was simply trying to point out that printing layouts at home isn't actually any more expensive than having them done online (and in many cases, it's much cheaper), and you get to control so many other variables - color profiling, paper types, etc.
What online company do you use to print layouts? I'd love to do a comparision...

If you're only buying a printer for printing 12x12 layouts, you are absolutely right. But I'm assuming that you'd also print things other than 12x12 layouts on your printer. I use mine for everything - 4x6 photos, expense reports, layouts, whatever... If you're already have a printer for all of the above, and aren't in the market for a new one, then printing your layouts online might be the cheapest way to go (especially if you're only printing 30 a year)... I print about 10-20 a month in different sizes (12x12, 8x8, and 6x6 mainly), so it would be worth it to me to have my own printer.

but i'm sure there are cheaper if you aren't limited to just australia (we print in australia because the postage costs from other countries are too prohibitive)

I just got the Canon i9900 for Christmas. I love the printer, but was surprised to learn
that it didn't print 12 x 12 borderless. I just joined scrapbook-bytes a short time ago and
posted a question about 12 x 12 borderless on the general forum, not realizing that there was a special printing forum. Anyway, on the general forum I had asked everyone that has the Canon i9900 to email Canon support to see if we could get them to change the driver to support borderless printing. Probably won't do any good, but can't hurt to try.
Naturally, this NEW printer does it all.....(sigh)
