Scanners

Enjoying reading about the scanners, because I have been looking at getting a new one. Looking at the Cano Scan LIDE 80 and the Epson 4180. The Cannon advertises that you can lay multiple pictures (or items) on the bed and it knows each one is an individual item so it saves them all individually. Does anyone know if the Epson 4180 has this same feature? Can seem to find info that tells me. Went to Best Buy today to look, but the kid there I don't think ever has used a scanner. If anyone has either of these two scanners, would enjoy hearing what you think of them. I have a Cannon i960 printer and LOVE IT. My main thing would be scanning old photo's and individual items (so staying with a flatbed scanner). The guy at Comp USA said to stick with a Cannon or an Epson for the best quality, but he didn't have the Espon 4180. Thank you.

Doris,

Yep - all of Epson's consumer level scanners have the ability to "sense" what you are laying on the bed - even if it's negatives or slides. But you need to be in the "Full Auto" mode to do so (There are 3 modes - Full Auto, Home, and Professional, on all the scanners.) Personally, I don't like that feature at all, since I usually want to crop in a bit when I scan, and do some other adjusting, but it is handy if you have a lot of pictures to get scanned in.

Thank you all for the great imput... I just found out a few days ago when I tried to hook up my OLD..Umax Astra 1220U scanner that it will not work on my XP...and that Umax is charging money for the new drivers..dumb!! I liked it and it worked just find but maybe it's time for a new one anyhow!! Didn't like the VistaScan software anyhow!!

I used to have a Epson printer and it was GREAT....then I bought a 4 in 1 HP and it is only good for the kids homework assignments, scanner is terrible, and I can't print edge to edge and only 8.5x11..

QUESTION...my old Umax scanner had the top lid that would accomodate say a thick book, the lid would adjust up...is this necessary? I do not know because I have never scanned with a lid that wouldn't lay down on the item being scanned...does that make sense? Or is it fine when the book is just laying on the glass bed? I ask about books because the only way I can get copies of my Heritage photo's is in a family book that is about 1 1/2 inches thick...

Which one is better Firewire or USB? I can use either...
Thanks
