So what exactly is an overlay?

Please excuse my ignorance...
I want to make some more freebies for my www.spaceraven.net site
but I'm not sure what is the difference between an overlay, a transparaency and a plopper?? Does an overlay have to be black or shades of grey? Or can it have color in it? How do you use them on a page?

Thanks in advance for answering my silly questions

Hmmmm, well, not sure that I will give you text book definitions, but, I'll try. I plopper is typically full size, has fully opaque (not transparent) areas for the backgrounds and stuff, and may have transparent areas too. It usually resembles a completed layout and you can put your images either behind, in front, and add journaling and you are done. Transparency, to the best of my knowledge, is not typically used to describe and image but to describe the quality of not being opaque. An overlay, is something that is placed over parts of your layout. It can be over the background, everything including photos, etc. Overlays vary widely from greyscale to color, having transparent and opaque areas to having no fully opaque areas, and can run the gamut from full size to those that appear torn and have texture to those that are intended to give your image to look of being torn.

Hope that helps.

That was a good answer so I am just going to add my 2 cents to maybe help clarify.
I would say a plopper is like a partially finished page (just plop in your pictures). An overlay is something that you put overtop of your layout to add "depth" - like sparles, or torn edges, or a large quote - it goes overtop of everything else on the layout.
Hope that helps.
