Question Help with Elements

I just joined the list 2 days ago and have not really been able to figure out if I am using the site appropriately. I use Corel Photopaint and also MS Digital Image Pro. I know the basics about photopaint (nothing fancy) but I do not know how to use the elements available for download or purchase. I downloaded a couple of elements in the png format and opened it in Photopaint but it has a background attached to it. The same theing happenes if I import it. How do you use them to look real without a background box and to be able to change the colors etc?
Thanks for any help.
Sandi

Hi Sandi,

Welcome! Does this happen to all elements you've downloaded or only this one? There may be a problem with just this particular element.

I am not sure Corel Photopaint supports the png format with transparency. Did you try opening it in Microsoft Digital Image Pro? It will have a white background but when you move it to your LO it will have a tranparent background.

I am new too and have been working in Ulead's Photo Impact and I noticed the same thing. You are suppose to right-click, copy and paste but for some reason my program (or it's just me) won't let me copy and paste as it is not highlighted when I right-click. What I did was do "Save as" for the image and save it in "My Pictures." Then I was able to add it in. But that seems like a lot of work.

Hi Lea,

Are you downloading the element first, saving to your computer and then opening the file in Photoimpact? I use the same program. When I open a PNG file the element is already selected.

Mona, I think my problem was with the file I downloaded. I had downloaded a couple freebies from some other sites before finding this forum. Last night I tried to do the right clicking with elements I downloaded from here and it worked! I think I question myself when something doesn't work because I do not have enough technical knowledge yet to back up what doesn't work for me.

Thank you for answering my post.

I think Sandi this is what you need to do. Bring it into your program (with the canvas you are working on open) and then right-click the element you want to bring into the canvas. You can copy and paste the element right on your canvas. (Mona, did I say this right?)

Hi Lea,

For Photoimpact the way you described is correct. If the element is not transparent then you'll get the white background as well. For the situation you described you can also just drag the element (object) onto the background. If you do this make sure you've made a duplicate of your element (control D), and close the original. Dragging the element is the equivalent of "moving" versus "copying."

HTH,

Elements

Vivian,
I was able to open the elements in MS Digital Image Pro without any background but how can I edit them? For example: Break apart to change colors, add shadows etc.
I know this will take me a long time to learn because I don't have the time I would like to experiment. I have been interested in Computer Scrapbooking for a long time but have been doing Paper Scrapbooking for about 5 years.
Thanks for any advice. I will be visiting and looking around as much as possible.
Sandi
