Cropping question, what am I doing wrong?

Okay, can anybody tell me if it's possible in Photoshop 7 to crop pictures in the same size?
Mmm let me explain: I want to make a collage but when I crop my pictures and drag them to the layout, they all have different sizes!
I have set the crop size to be 4 inches by 4 inches and the pictures are all taken by the same camera and the same camerasettings.
Until now I just put the pictures on top of each other and "Free Transform" to the same size but I'm guessing there is a better way ( a faster and more precise way )
What am I doing wrong?

Monique

You want to be sure that all the photos are the same DPI as the file you are creating. Then they should all be the same size.

Question

Thank you for your quick reply, but when the pictures are taken with the same camera and camerasettings (even on the same day) shouldn't all the pictures have the same DPI and properties?

From what you wrote I think you may be confusing cropping and resizing.

I use an Olympus E-20, 5MP. All my images are 3560 pixels (35.556 in) X 1920 pixels (26.667 in) at 72dpi.

When I crop in Photoshop (for printing) I set my dpi to 300. Keep in mind that cropping and resizing are two different things. Likewise if you fix your marquee to 4x4 it is still different than cropping.

If you have four images coming off your camera, and they are the same size as I mentioned above, and you crop each one to 4x4 inches at 300 dpi they should all be the same size.

When you create your layout the background NEEDS to be the same dpi as the photos you are going to be putting into the layout. In this case 300dpi.

Hope this helps.

My method is quite different, but it works for me.

Usually when I want to make images of the same size, I first make a new document specifiying the size I want. In your case, 4 x 4 inches. File > New > Preset Sizes -Custom > Width-4 inches >Height-4 inches.

Then I open up my photos, select a portion of it with the marquee tool & paste it onto the new document (the 4 x 4 inches) onto a new layer. I paste all the photos I selected onto that same document.

When I want to use a certain photo, I simply click on that layer with that photo and go to Select > All (or Ctrl + A if you're using a PC) and then go to Edit > Copy (or Ctrl + C if you're using a PC), then paste it onto the collage I'm working on.

Anyway, I hope this help. I'm sorry if it's confusing. Ask me if you're not sure.

I always use the crop feature and set the size as well as DPI- I set the DPI to 300 and only work in 300 dpi and I don't have problems when I copy and paste (if I don't- I have the same problem as you).

I only use re-size to downsize my files from 300 dpi ti 72 dpi for sharing.
