Please help me with the elements

Some of the elements I have downloaded, instead of downloading came as pics, so I right clicked save picture as (am I making sense?)

Now when I open them they have a black background. How do I use them? I've been magic wanding the black (in PSP 7) but it still leaves an outline that sometimes can't be erased.

*Also sometimes, for example eyelets, you get say 10 and they all come up when you only want one of them.

*Also (yes I am REALLY dumb! LOL) I downloaded some stiching but it also opens like a picture (although it was a download) it won't let me export it to tubes, so how do I use that one?

Sorry to be sooooo stupid, you don't have to answer until you can stop laughing

Hi, AA.

1.) when you download the pictures, make sure you got a PNG -- not a JPG. Sometimes there is a JPG, which is the sample, but you can't download and use that as an element. If you have a JPG, go back to the download section and look for the link. That will take you to the PNG.

2.) For transparency issues in PSP, see this thread:

Graphic background transparent?

3.) If you have an element with say, 10 eyelets, and you only want to use one, select the one you want to use and then use copy / paste to add only that eyelet to your layout.

3.) Almost all elements here are shared as pngs, since you can use them in all programs -- once you get past #1, that is. Only PSP has tubes. So, the stitching should be a png, which is transparent. You can then use it the same way you would use any other element. I don't use PSP, so if there is a way to use a PNG as a tube, I don't know what that is. But I'll bet someone else does.

4.) I'm not laughing. I was new once too.

HTH and welcome.

If you are downloading from the elements section here at SBB you only have to left click on the link and the download will start. Most everything that is downloadable from here is in a zip file so you will have to unzip it before you use it.

OK, here's my answer, and I don't know why it works. The only reason I know this is because someone actually posted "directions" with their downloadable element. On those elements that open instead of giving you the download box:

After the image opens, and you realize it is one of those type elements, CLOSE IT
Go back to where you originally clicked and click your "right button" (this doesn't work on the opened image, you have to do it from the picture in the gallery) and select "SAVE TARGET", then save it where you need to. Hopefully that will work for you, it has for me, and is actually easier because you don't have to go unzip anything.

Goodluck

an easier way of doing what amy says:

if it ends in zip- click it and it will download.

if it ends in jpg or png, or any other image file extension- right click and choose 'save target'.

Well, writing, I'm the someone who said that. When you do the copy / paste, do you get the eyelet on your layout?

Here's what I was trying to describe, in a little more detail.
  • Open your layout
  • Open the file with the eyelets
  • Make the file with the eyelets the active window
  • Use your selection tool to select the eyelet you want to use. I think, in most programs, you will see what looks like marching ants around your selection
  • Use Menu Edit / Copy (or CTRL+C in Windows) to copy the selection
  • Switch windows, and make your layout the active window
  • Use Menu Edit / Paste (or CTRL+V in Windows) to paste eyelet you selected and copied into your layout. Note: it looks like in Paint ShopPro you need to do Edit / Paste / Paste as New Layer, or CTRL+L.
  • If you want four eyelets on the page, do the Paste 3 more times. All of the eyelets will be on top of each other, on different layers. You will need to move them to where you want them to be.

All of the eyelets will still be on the sheet in your original file, but that's ok, I think. If you wanted to remove the eyelet from that sheet, you would use Edit / Cut or CTRL+X. I would not do that myself, because then odds are I'd wind up doing something dumb like saving the eyelet file without the eyelet I cut and pasted. If you do the COPY rather than the CUT, you haven't changed your original file.

HTH.
