Just a reminder and warning...

if you haven't backed up recently, DO IT!!! This morning my brand new external hard drive (only a month and a half old) quit on me. The lights are on, but nothing is happening. It basically has my whole life on it...all my pictures, designs, music, everything. Luckily, it started having problems yesterday and I backed up onto DVD's. Now I just have to hope I copied everything important.

ARG!!!! Computers!!

Deb

tutorials on this?

Wow, I know how important this is and am soo sorry you have to deal with this! I hope the seller makes it right with you.
Is there any chance we could get someone to do some tutorials on reformatting, partitioning, ghosting, backing up the hard drives? I copy to discs the LO's, pics and documents I want to protect, but I know there's a lot more to it than that. For instance...what does one do about all the software that's been paid for and downloaded-installed? All that would have to be re-installed, yes? But, if you are lucky enough to remember all that you had, how do you prove to the designers that you purchased it and get them to let you have it again?
I'm sure there are many others with questions on how to do all this and I don't mind being the one who looks clueless enough to ask! That's the only way to get the information!
Thanks!
Laurie

DITTO on backing up often!! I lost 2 hard drives in the past 6 months!! Makes you wonder if it was just me or was it some kind of virus from downloading constantly... even though I run 2 anti-virus programs!!!

I had all my ds's photos backed up but not any of my projects.. you know that 'i am going to be sick' feeling!!!!

NOW, I have a cd-rw in my drive at all times so I can drag & drop, delete etc. all my projects and pictures. When that is full I burn it to a cd-r and re-use the cd-rw. Then when I get enought to burn to a DVD (4.7gb)... nobody asked but if it is worth spending hours on, you might want to save it!

Ditto!

I just bought a DVD burner because I am a back up freak! I was getting way to many CD's with all my elements and layout (I was saving with all layers) and pictures! I'm in the process of moving all of those to DVD! I love it! As for the programs that you download and pay for you can back those up on CD's or DVD's also. I even make back up's to CD's that I buy just in case something goes wrong with the original Can you tell I've lost EVERYTHING before? Yep, pictures, elements, layouts, (the only thing I had left was the printed version) everything! I was so bummed that all the pictures I took over Christmas last year were GONE! It was the first Christmas DH spent with him mom in about 12 years! I feel your pain!

There was a big file I forgot to copy

and I lost a month and a half of pictures

It could be worse. The only thing I'm backtracking on now is I ordered eyecandy and superblade pro as downloads and I lost those. However, I found them in the photoshop folders (on my good drive--- the 5 y.o. one go figure) so I quickly made a back up of them today. If I ever lose photoshop, hopefully, I'll be able to just plop those files back into the plug ins and have them work.

The other things I've lost are recent downloads and fonts I got from here and some other places. Now it's just a matter of figuring out what I've lost.

Great idea on the RW. I'm going to go out and buy one. I used to wait until I could fill up one cd, but that's just too long now. I'm going to go get an RW so that I can back up daily. This has just left a sickening feeling in my stomach all day!!

Luckily I backed up the whole drive on 5 dvds a month ago, so it's just a matter of finding everything I've done in the last month.

I really, really, really hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. I think the thing that upsets me the most was that it was a new drive. I had put everything important on it in case of some natural disaster (we had fires last year) I could just grab my family and my hard drive and go.

Thanks for lissenin' to me whine.
