How do I squish ribbon at one location to put it through a ring?

Does that make *any* sense?

Sometimes I want to draw some ribbon in at one location so I can put a washer word or a buckle something around it - I know how to put the ribbon "through" the buckle (just learned that!) but don't know how to do it if the ribbon is too wide for the buckle.......

I'm using Photoshop CS.

squishing

Emmy,

Here's one way to do it:

1. make sure your ribbon is vertical on the screen (rotate it 90-degrees if necessary).
2. make a rectangular selection around the area you want to "squish".
3. under the Filters menu, choose Distort>Pinch. Adjust the slider for the amount you want

You will get a smoother transition if you feather your selection.

Thanks so much Tandika! BTW the fabric fringing went nicely LOL! I tried your instruction for that this morning and it turned out pretty well. I'll give this a go!

DawnMcD - threading ribbon through a buckle.......I'm not sure how well I will word this.....you basically place your ribbon, then place the buckle at the location you want it to thread through making sure the layer of the buckle is beneath the layer of the ribbon. Then you duplicate your ribbon layer and put that duplicated layer on the top of everything else. So you have 2 ribbon layers with a buckle layer sandwiched in between. Then paying attention to what layer you have selected, you use the eraser tool to erase whatever portion of that layer shouldn't be there - to end up with a visual of it being threaded through. You kind of have to try it kwim? Once you have it looking like you want, link your 3 pieces and do a "merge linked" to make them one unit. Hope that will help ya - if not, I'm sorry, I'm fairly new myself and I kind of ask for hints on how to get myself started and then just play with stuff to figure it out. Not sure that I have the gift of explaining them though!

Buckle

Emmy,

An even easier way to do the ribbon and buckle thing is:

1. put the ribbon on a layer above (on top of) the buckle
2. hold down the CTRL key and click on the ribbon layer. (This will select the entire ribbon.)
3. Go up to the menu bar and select Layer>Add Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. Now there is a new little pic on the ribbon layer. That is the "Mask". Anything you paint with BLACK on the mask will "hide" part of the ribbon.
4. Without changing layers, hold down your CTRL key and click on the buckle layer. This will make a selection the shape of the buckle ... BUT ... when you paint with black, you'll be painting on the RIBBON layer.
5. Paint over the part of the ribbon where you want the buckle to SHOW. (Don't worry, if you make a mistake, simply switch to WHITE and "undo" it.)

You can always make sure you're painting into the MASK on the layer by clicking on the MASK ICON on the layer. (Hint: If your paint colors are not black and white, then you are NOT painting on the mask! They will switch to B&W or shades of grey when that's all you can use!)

By using a mask, you don't have to make multiple copies, and the "original" is still there to use again.
