how to do a fringed piece of fabric?

I'd like to have a piece of fabric with fringe on the edge but not sure how to go about it? How is everyone else doing this?

I always forget to say! LOL Adoble Photoshop CS. I also have Photoshop Elements, just haven't loaded it to a machine yet, but I can if I need to.

Ok, that works for me! Now, how much "fringe" you will want on your fabric is up to you... but here's one thing you may want to try:

1. Make a new layer. You're going to use this layer for the shape that you "cut out" of your piece of fabric.
2. Using your selection tool(s), make an outline of the shape you want. Use the freehand lasso tool to draw odd shapes, or just the rectangle tool if you want a simple mat.
3. Fill your shape with the paint bucket. Any color will do.
4. Make sure the shape is still selected. If it's not, reselect it.
5. Select the Brush Tool. In the Brush Palette, select the "chalk" brush (standard PS brush).
6. Still in the Brush Palette, adjust the "spacing" so that each shape is only slightly overlapped.
7. In the Brush Palette, click on the WORDS for "Shape Dynamic". Make the Angle Jitter 100% and then check the boxes for "Flip X Jitter" and "Flip Y Jitter". (What this will do is rotate EACH placement of the brush so that your line won't be "straight and solid".)
8. Now that you have the brush selected, and the shape all set up, click on the PATHS tab in your Layer's Palette.
9. At the bottom of the Paths Palette, there's a bunch of little symbols. The 4th one from the left (a circle with arrows going both directions at the top!) will change your selection to a path. Click on that.
10. Click on the 2nd little pic (The hollow circle). That will "stroke" your brush along the path. Click anywhere in the grey area of the Path's palette to DEselect the path, and go back to your Layers Palette.

Now, when you look at the shape you made, it should have a "fuzzy" edge. How much will depend on the diameter of your brush, so you'll have to experiment. You can also try the grass brush shape for a longer "fringe".

welcome

You're welcome. One of these days (when they put an extra day in each week?) I'll try to make a tutorial for it.

Thanks from me too Tandika! This is something I've been trying to figure out how to do in Photoshop CS myself....I'm learning to pay attention when I see that you have answered somebody's question! <grin>
