How to add layers?

've run into a snag and all the books I've consulted are of no help whatsoever.

I have 6 GIF files that I want to combine into an animated web banner. I know, I know, use layers! But, how in the heck do you get those GIFs onto the layers???

I can open the layers pallete and then open one of my GIFs. The pallette then shows that one GIF. But it will not accept any more and everything to do with layers is grayed out. I know I'm missing something and there must be some way to get each GIFF onto a separate layer and displayed in the layers pallette, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out. Thanks for any help or guidance in this area. I'm totally lost.

Well you haven't mentioned what program you are using, but in photoshop elements, you can drag and drop I believe. Not sure about regular photoshop and I can't remember for sure about psp, but give it a try.

I would imagine most programs have similar methods, so I'll tell you my suggestion based on Photoshop. I would open a new image the size you need for your final image. Then open the gif images and copy them (drag or select portion needed then edit-copy) to the new image, one by one. Photoshop will lock images so I can't move them, but on the layers palette I can deselect the locked tab. Now you should have a layer for each image displayed on the layer palette for the new image. Try this and see if it works for you. Again, since I don't know which program you're using I'm not sure if this helps!

you need to make sure you are working in rgb as gif are indexed color and cannot drag and drop and are locked in photoshop ( but not all programs).. nature of the beast

you can copy and paste though and it will automatically create layers

however if you are wanting to animate it you will want to use something that uses frames AND layers

see there on this animated banner i created for Jacquel

this was done by use of layers and frames in Image Ready ( the accompany program that comes with adobe photoshop)
