Welcome aboard Ed!
You're correct that most of those involved in scrapbooking are female and that alot of the LO's (layouts) are more feminine in expression. As a fellow (married) male who is just getting into digital scrapbooking, I too wondered how I was going to create layouts that were more masculine in nature since every time I opened a magazine on the subject it was pretty much all "fluffy" stuff.
That being said, you've come to the right place to learn. Because there is such a huge volume of submitted LO's on SBB you will find a great diversity in expression. To get started, I would look through the Gallery, and when you find a style that you like, view that person's personal Gallery to get more ideas. Also, read through the Tutorials, and browse the Elements for ideas. The Design Team Members do awsome stuff! You can always ask folks for help, and they will come rushing to your aid.
Lastly, I just subscribed to the E-zine (which is of course, is in an computer format) and it has great ideas, articles, and free-bees from the Design Team. I found this to be a great investment since the cost of the digital "Special Editions" from the regular scrapbook magazines really adds up.
Oh, there is one "Special Edition" mag that I would really recommend to anyone getting started (like me), its from Memory Makers, and its called "Layout Mania". While it is written from the point of view of traditional paper scrapbooking, it has some great articles on the fundementals of design.
Again, glad you joined, and you're not alone!
