digital paperpiecing

Hi guys

I found paperpiecing in reallife and love the effect it gives (nice crisp lines, vibrant colours etc.)
I would like to use this in digital paperpiecing.
I found an example I love here http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...cat=662&page=6
I don't know if it is scanned or not, but I like the result.

I tried to create an apple, but you can see it's fake

Does anyone have any tips on how to make the paper look more papery?

well the only thing i see really is that the drop shadow on the little shine and the leaf is a bit heavy so it looks like it's floating on it. reduce that and your fine. you have a nice texture from what i can see since i'm not viewing hte high rez version and the colors are bright!. overall i give it a great job!

Thanks I noticed it kindof myself, but it felt more was wrong.

So I tried again
Because I work with photoshop 7 (PS7) I'll record what I did.

For the next flower
http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...cat=500&page=1
  • I started 4 times as big as my original picture (about 16 times the size I want in the end, but I can make it smaller, but not much bigger!)
Layer stile:
  • For the shadow: 30% opacity Distance 2 Spread 0 Size 2
  • Bevel: 2 px
  • And last but not least I didn't use any texture there. I used a pattern overlay at 10% (in my case parcment from the artists textures). This was absolutely nessecary. The paper I use is smooth and you see it. As soon as I used a real texture it became the expensive paper I'd never use for a job like this one. Still even in this cheap paper u see every fiber in it, so you need someting!

Then I stored it as a new style so now I only had to fill (layer for layer) with a bright colour and press my new paperpiecing style.

A quick and easy way to make paperpiecing patterns from your pictures

i think you're doing a really good job. i would add a little texture to make it look like paper. a slight shadow, like you have on the flower helps too!
great job!!!

I do paper piecing in psp 7-8 all the time, I found that it is about balancing texture with drop shadows. Don't worry you will get the hand of it. I did notice that you have very jagged edges and you might want to soften that out just a bit. If you ever need any help you can email me xanadu@piecesofme.net I am always willing to help people out with anything. I have also added a link to one of my piecings.
