Anne Maree, it's hard to know exactly what effect you're looking for but my suggestion would be to first change the photo to black and white and then apply the "Pencil: Grayscale Sketch" or the "Pencil: Light Sketch"... to me these give the appearance of what I think of when I think of a pencil sketch without having to do too much more to the pic. Once you've clicked on the particular effect you can always go to the "change advanced options" and play around with the settings or even choose a different "brush"... hope that helps!!!

The Pen sketch also works great. For my layout here http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...cat=500&page=1 I turned the pic b&w and then used the pen:sketch effect. I adjusted the advanced options slightly by increasing the transparency and increasing the brush size *I think* lol

Just play around with the effects and then the advanced options to get a feel of what you can do for best effect

When I first started DSing I was really taken by the sketch look. I really wanted to do a LO with it. I think Garlou did a post on how she got the look of sketch and I took that and created my own sketch look with photos of my children.

Here is what I did.

1. Found the original photos, when to touchup>sharpen and changed that to 87% (Garlou suggested 100% but it made my image very pixelated.) Then changed the photo to B&W.
2. Go to Touchup> Brightness and Contrast> i changed mine to about negative 20 brightness positive 60 contrast
3. Go to filter> Film Grain Rough, grain type soft, graininess 23 contrast 72
4. Go to touchup>other photo repair> Dodge and Burn brush. This took me a bit to get perfected and even now I'm still not completely settled with the results. I turned the brush to negative 7 and used it to darken eyes, mouth and edges. Then I turned around and changed it to about postitive 14 to brighten eyes and edges in a touch up.

If you click on the link to my photo there is a post by me that has the link to Garlou's recommendations. You'll have to tweak it some also but this should work pretty well I haven't used the Eyecandy method that Shelley mentioned but I know eyecandy has a lot of perks to offer.

To get the effect i used in this layout http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...cat=500&page=1 in DIP9 I first turned my pic B&W ( Effects>Black&White) Then I used Effects>Filters>all Filters > Pen:Line Drawing and tweaked teh advanced options til I got the effect I wanted.
To soften teh edges I used Effects>Transparency>Gradual and chose the round effect and flipped it

You can also tweak a few of the other effects. The results will depend on your picture and its tonal range. Adjust the advanced options til you get teh look you are after. The attached file shows examples of the filters under Effects>Filters>All Filters in DIP9
See the file attached or here at SBB

There is also a free plug in called Porcelain available through www.xero-graphics.co.uk which reportedly looks great.
