size for uploading

I hate to be so dense but I just can't figure this thing out!!!
Sometimes I create a page at 12x12 and 300ppi then resize and save a jpg to upload and it's just fine, other times I can't get it small enough without losing everything. Sometimes, like for the speed scraps, I create the page at 72ppi in hopes that I won't have the hassle of resizing. Sometimes the page is small enough and sometimes I cannot get it under 500K. I have used the JPEG optimizer, I have tried the resize by percent and by size. I just don't seem to get predictable results. Is this a PSP8 thing or is it me (I think I know the answer tho this one).
I made one at 72ppi and saved as jpg for May's sketch challenge. In my folder it says it is only 257K, but in PSP image information it says 733K. SBB says it is too large to upload.

PLEASE HELP BEFORE I GO MAD!!!

Changing the resolution will not help unfortunately, since that does not change the size as well.

What I do is use a compression of about 80% when using image optimiser [in Photo Impact] then resize that jpeg to about 700 pixels across. It doesn't always work out exactly since it depends on how many colours are in my layouts, but generally I resize to between 500 - 700. This gives me a file size in general of between 120 - 125k.

Hope this helps...

Size for Uploading

I use PSP8, and I know what you mean about the sizez being wierd. There are times when I say a layout as a JPG, and it works with no optimizing, and other times I need to compress it as much as 25% to make it work. I generally use 8.5x11 pages though...

What I've found is if the image is too big, I just run it through the optimizer. On the JPEG Optimizer dialog box, find the box near the center marked:

"Set compression value to:"

And watch the "compressed" numbers just under the images. Once it gets below 125,000 bytes, click ok, and save your layout.

I hope this helps. I don't use 12x12, so I don't know what to tell you if it doesn't work for that size...

I use PSP 8.1 and this is how I resize for upload: Copy finished layout & close original. Go to Image-resize. In the print size section, change resolution to 72 dpi. Then change width/height back to 8 x 10 or 12 x 12. (600 x 600 pixels). Check the following check boxes at the bottom: Resample using smart size. Lock aspect ration (the default # here is fine) & resize all layers. Most of the time this will decrease file size enough to post it. If it is still too big, use optimization wizard to make file size smaller. File>export>jpeg optimizer. On quality tab, increase compression value a bit at a time till file download size is under 125k. I create all my LO's at 200 dpi because 300 dpi slows my computer down too much. Hope this helps.

texture and compression

One thing you might want to keep in mind is the JPEG compression works best on large areas of a single color. When you add texture to your layout, you break up the area, often in one pixel sections. When you do that it is difficult to compress down to anything visually appealing.

A case in point is a LO that I just posted here:

http://www.scrapbook-bytes.com/galle...cat=500&page=1

Unfortunately, all the "papers" are textured, the background has (had) an embossed pattern, the frame a texture, the velum a texture, etc. To get the whole thing compressed down enough to upload, the textures pretty well trashed out. <sigh> Oh well, it looks good printed.

I always change the DPI to 72 and change the pixel size to 430.

The credit for the instructions I've given must go to someone else, the only thing is I don't remember who. When I was a "newbie" I asked how to upload and these were the instructions I was given, now if I see a similar query I pass it on. Thanks whoever you are out there!!
