HELP! Photoshop background colors, etc

OK, I KNOW I am missing something obvious. Say I select NEW, and select BACKGROUND COLOR. If I decide to use a different BG color after it is created, how do I change it? For some reason it is not working for me....

Next question- how do I adjust the transparency- I used to know this and my brain went east for lunch and it is gone. POOF.

Well, Sindea, I didn't know that you could define a bg color when you first create your LO. But there are several things you can change the background down the road. If it's just a straight color, you could use the paint bucket tool to change the color of the whole layer. Or if you're not 100% sure that you want to get rid of your background, create a new layer with whatever pattern or color you want. Place the new layer above the background in your layers palette and then by turning on and off the new layer you can see your LO with either bg.

To change the transperency of a layer, just adjust the "opacity" slider in the layers palette.

HTH!

make your background layer active in the layers palette. Next at the top menu bar, select....IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>HUE/SATURATION.....

now play with the sliders until you get the color you want.

I never choose my bacgound color first, LOL. I have used that option before, but honestly don't know what colors I am going to use until I start. I usually start my new file as white and then work with my photos. Then I use either papers or add a background color with the color fill layer and arrange the layers. -Ali

I really dislike using the locked backround layer so i usually just click ok then when the window comes up i create a blank layer and delete the locked backround. it's useless to me most of the time. sometimes i leave it as white when i'm working with a lot of opaque things thing i want to be able to see when the checkered pattern makes my eyes buggy. you can select the layer that is your ' backround' and click edit>fill then select your fill color from the list foreground backround white black 50% gray. foreground is the front color you have picked and backround color is the back color you have picked. so before you click edit to fill the backround have you color selected. either that or you can go the hue sat mode and just play with the dials to find the color you want.

i sometimes do things the hard way but it works for me.

very interesting hearing how everyone starts their layouts - I always start my with a transparent background - might fill it with color eventually might not and EVERYTHING goes on a separate layer!!! when possible.

fran, you and I work alike. I always start with transparent and everything on it's on layer...of course I regularly have 300 MB files so that is the trade off. But I can pull out whatever I need at any time. I just use the keyboard shortcut to fill my "background" (which is really just a layer, not the flattened background) which is alt+backspace.
