Tutorial on Eyelets or Rivets

Can anyone help me create eyelets? I tried to use Ivonne's tutorial on eyelets but it just wasn't working for me. Then I realized she developed hers in PSP7. Since I have PSP8, could that be the problem? If not, I guess I need more detailed information. Ivonne's element instructions were somewhat generic in telling us to experiment with the settings. The more I experiemented, the worse things became! Is there a more detailed PSP8 tut somewhere that I can use? Can anyone help?

Thanks!

I might be able to help. I am not sure how familiar you are with PSP but I will give this a try. I have PSP 8.0

In your shapes list there is a tool that looks like a ring. I draw a shape with this in whatever color you want. Then using the magic wand tool under your selection tool, left click over that shape to select the ring. You will know it is selected by the dotted lines around the ring. Then under effects, and 3D effects choose inner bevel. If your ring is a vector layer it will ask you to promote this to a full layer, click ok. A window will open, this is where you will need to experiment with color, ambience, elevation etc. When you change anything in this window it will show you the preview in the preview window. For an inner bevelled looking eyelet try # 12 or # 3 in the bevel type. Try width 15-17, intensity & elevation 40-50, and adjust the others to your liking. Once you choose what looks best, voila you have a eyelet. You will notice in your layers window that you now have a promoted layer and a vector layer. I then go and merge the two layers together. If you do not know how, right click on the promoted layer in your layer window and choose merge down. It should merge the two layers together.

To finish off your eyelet you will also want to add a drop shadow to this. Under the same effects menu, choose drop shadow. You can choose any color, black works the best.
For eyelets I like to set the offset settings at 3-5 for both vertical and horizontal offset, and a higher opacity and low blur. This again play around with until you like the result.

For a rivet without the hole, you can virtually do the same process except for the first step draw a circle, and try out the inner bevel tool or the outer bevel. Make sure you select your shape with the magic wand. You can use this method to make any shape of rivet, experiment with different shapes. My favorite is flowers for rivets.lol

I hope this helps and makes sense.

Sandy

Me again Debbie
I was thinking this morning that I am not sure what type of rivet or eyelet you want to make. For a eyelet that is rounded out do the above, and when you select inner bevel try these settings.

Bevel type 1, width 8
Image smooth 87, depth 29, Ambience 0, shininess 41
Light choose a lighter color than your original, angle 246, intensity 50 and elevation 37.

Another place to find great PSP 8 tutorials for scrapbooking is http://designsbyjoy.net/PSPTutorials1/

I hope I have not confused you too much. Have fun.

Sandy

Smile Eyelets and Rivets

Hi, Sandyd,

Thank you for the help. I will try it out this evening when I get home. Providing the settings for the bevel, drop shadow, etc. will help a lot. I'm not very good with generic instructions yet. Details!!!! I have PSP8 so your lesson should be right on the money. One question though. When and how do you cut the hole to make the "eye". At the end of your post you said "for a rivet without a hole..." did I miss something? Thanks again for your help!

Debbie57

P.S. Just got your other message. I'm a bit confused now but I'll wait and try and figure it out tonight at home. Once I get into PSP, it may make perfect sense! Thanks again!

Hi Debbie.
I thought my message were a bit confusing. The ring shape already has the hole in it. Saves having to make a hole. This I find is the easiest way to make a eyelet. You could draw a circle and then cut out the hole, but this is easier. When I say rivet without the hole I am meaning like a thumb tack rivet. I picture a rivet and an eyelet as two different things. I may be incorrect with my terminology and they may be the same. That is why I gave you both.

Have fun and let me know how it goes.

Sandy

Eyelets and Rivets

Hi, Sandy,

Thank you for clarifying that. Right now I'm working on the free trial version of PSP8 and they do not show a ring in the presets. But on a couple tutorials I was working on they stated that if you're working the trial version, some of the tools, etc. may not be there. So I'm assuming that is the case here. The only choice I have is an ellipse. I'll let you know how it goes!

Thanks!

Debbie

Sorry about that. Disregard all previous messages and try this instead.Try drawing a circle with the ellipse from your shapes tool.
You have to make sure that your shape is a raster layer before you try to delete with your selection tool, so once drawn right click on your layer palette and then select convert to a raster layer. Now you can make your hole

Your selections tool looks like a dotted line square, then at the top of your screen in your selection type choose ellipse, ensure your mode is replace. Drag you cursor with your left mouse button in the center of your drawn circle, you will have to play around with placement of the selection. Your right mouse button will erase it if you do not like it. Once you are happy with the placement of the selection circle, hit delete or cut.
Then go into the selection menu at the top of the screen and choose select none. Once you have the hole cut out, then follow the same instructions from the magic wand on. In the selection tool bar choose the magic wand and left click over your ring. Then effects at top, 3D effect, and inner bevel.

Use these settings (same as above)Bevel type 1, width 8
Image smooth 87, depth 29, Ambience 0, shininess 41
Light choose a lighter color than your original color, angle 246, intensity 50 and elevation 37.

Then add your drop shadow.

You must be very overwhelmed by now, but like I said ignore everything I said before and try this one.LOL!

Eyelets and Rivets

Sandy,

Okay, I'm further than I was! That's progress! I got the eyelet made but it looks more like a flat disk than a 3D element! I want the bevels to be more rounded with a shiney, metallic look. But when I'm in the bevel dialog menu, there is no preview showing in the preview window, only the transparent raster checkerboard--I have no idea what is happening with the object until I click okay. Also, somewhere along the line it converted me to a floating selection--whatever that is!

I thought it might be easier to download someone's free eyelets, but that isn't working either. There are several eyelets on one page. I have copied and pasted the one I want but since it's not a vector, I can't drag to resize it. I've tried to resize (under the Image menu) but although I made the numbers larger, the eyelet actually got smaller! Is there anything straight forward about PSP?! For every two steps forward I take three steps back!

Is there hope for me?

Debbie
