kim,
i havent tried the torn edge effect. put if pi is telling you that you have to select a picture to do this.... check out my thread under microsoft picture it named cutouts. amanda and shelleyrae give a remedy for this problem. would post a link directly to it, but havent figured that one out yet. hope that helps. also, you may be able to get quicker and more specific help if you post your picture it or dip questions under software in the picture it category.

Thanks Kimmy, I appreciate it. I took a look at the tut, and then realized that when using a picture from the gallery to change the color of the shape, you cannot use the handy dandy color schemer that someone recently suggested. ( THIS IS GREAT ) -- I am trying now to figure out what the numbers for the colors in 'change color or texture' option mean. Is this making sense? I want to be able to select custom colors with the color schemer -- can any one help with this? Thanks... I probaly should post this in the PI section huh?

take care,

HI
lets see if I can help you out..if I have misunderstood the question let me know. I see you have figured out how to actually get the torn edges..there is an easier way to..just use your transparency brush set at 100% with a hard edge and erase your own torn edge from whatever you like (including shapes). : )
Now as to colour from what I understand you want to use the custom colour to change the colour of the mat.
First just fill it with any colour and then use the following steps.
If you are pulling the colour from a photograph or element already on your page you can use the colour wheel and choose "More solid color choices" the use the eyedroper tool to select the colour you want from any object on your page.
If you specifically want to use a custom colour from the fill colour menu the easiest way would be to fill a shape with your custom colour on your page and use it as a reference so you can then use Effects> fill with texture or color and the eyedropper tool to refernce your chosen colour. You can then just delete the uneccessary shape.
Does that make sense?? As I said if it doenst let me know. I think I will have to do a tut for torn edges in DIP : )

Thanks so mu;ch for your information Shellyrae. I don't know why I haven't tried this before. It makes perfect sense to make the torn edges this way. And they way that you told to describe the color matching is exactly what I finally came up with last night. It works perfect, then I just delete the unwanted object. Your information was right on.... You're awesome... Take care, Kristie
