can only get jpegs to save as bmp

Does anyone have any fixes for my PC to be saving all my jpeg downloads (i.e. all background papers and tiles) as bmp files. I remember reading something about this but I wasn't having this problem at the time and can't exactly remember what the fix is.

I tried deleting my temporary internet files and clearing my history. Any other ideas...

Thanks,
Trina

Smile Saving BMP as JPEG

Hi,

I am new to this forum, so using this as a general "Hello" to all!
Saving BMPs to JEPG depends on what program you are using. I use Paint Shop Pro for all my designing. Most graphic programs should use these same instructions...Open the pic in your program, then click on "file" then "save as" ...on the top box, name your picture, the bottom box should have an arrow with a drop down box...scroll until you see *jpg,*jpeg. Click on this and then hit save. You should check to make sure your pic was saved in jpeg and after you have confirmed this you can delete the BMP. I save all my pics to JPEG due to the enormous amount of disk space a BMP uses. Ex: One BMP pic could be 700kb to 1MB, if you change it to JPEG it becomes 50kb to 75kb. Alot of freed up disk space! Hope this helps..Any questions, feel free to ask.

I've had this problem with AOL and Nescape (I dont like or use Internet Explorer unless I have to). With Netscape i had to tell it how to handle .png files because it was saving them as .bmp files.....and with AOL if i remember correctly, there was a compression setting the the prefrences that made pages load faster, I think i had to deselect that. (i left AOL over a year ago and no longer have it installed) Once you adjust your browser setting, you may want to redownload the graphics as the original file type so you dont lose quality.

Now if you try to save a .bmp as another file type thu a graphics program, you will lose quality.....especially with .png and .gif files downloaded as .bmp, you lose the transparent effect and everything has a white background.

I had asked a similar question recently. Maybe it was my post you saw. Anyway, I was doing something wrong. When you see an element for example you like, open the picture then look for the link down below the author's comments. Do not reopen the picture, but right click the link. You should then have the option to save as a png file. I don't know if this helps, but it's what I was doing. Good luck!

Hello Trina-
I believe that the thread you are asking about was deleted when they had to restore to an earlier date

This is the fix from microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...650&product=ie

follow the instructions for Cause #1

Natasha thought it might be a bug so she gave another solution also- maybe she'll chime back in!

Also, I remember when I was at the autofx.com website, I was still having this problem even after I thought it was fixed.
Solution: I wasn't signed in because it didn't ask me to- so I thought- well I must still be signed in from the last visit.
Soooooo, be sure that you click refresh on a page if you are still having the same problem after the above fix at Microsoft.

HTH
