Post PS7 using elliptical/feathering/vignette

OK, so I received some great suggestions on my one layout I posted. Here is the problem, I have photos I wish to vignette and then mask off so I get the totally soft blurred edges.... I was ent to the www.thinkdan.com site- quite helpful! But for some reason I must be missing a step. Can someone PLEASE walk me thru this? I mean step by step. I have gotten as far as being able to use the elliptical marque, create a nice soft vignette, and even was able to get rid of the 'excess' background. But I still cannot figure out how to remove the now black border that replaced the background, nor how to create the soft edges. I think I should use a brush? But have never attempted that before. Thanks!!!

Not sure what your black border is? Perhaps this tutorial will help:

what i do is this.

first- i got to Layer>New>Layer from Background (otherwise- i end up with a border the color of my background color- if it's a layer, then there is no border when i finish).

then i use the elliptical selection tool to select what i want in the vignette.

then i go to Select>Feather. i enter a number- what you put here depends on how 'blurry' you want the edges. the higher the number- the blurrier the edges.

then i invert the selection, and hit delete on the keyboard.

Thanks! OK, I MUST be missing something. I did the steps as you mentioned. And it does look softer. But I am not able to get rid of the background. I tried it with 3 different photos- well, same photo, saved 3 different ways.
1- using the original, it looks softer, but still boxey, no matter how high of a number I pick for feathering.
2- with the 'oval' I had created with the black background around the edges of the oval- I still get that darn black border....
3- with a white background- I had used the magic wand to clear the background, but the white is there!

How do I get my newly softened image to just be on its own? Like I said, I tried starting from scratch with the original photo, but still had rectangle edges.... Thanks!

Are you converting your layer to a raster layer?

In your layers pallete (press L if you dont see it), double click the layer, it will convert itself.
Then try again.

Also if you are using a high feather it wont delete a lot of the image, you could try pressing delete more than once, that might help.

Let me know if you dont come right.

Make sure your photo is not a background layer.

As was said before, double click on the layer in the layers pallette...then you can just use the default of everything that comes up after (hit ok). Then try the vignette...you should come up with a transparent background (those little gray and white checks).
