Getting That Magazine Ad Look

I really enjoy the layouts I've seen that look like a magazine ad and not the traditional 3-D scrapping. Is there a certain techinque to creating pages like that? I'm an ad designer for a daily paper, but we work mostly with black and white graphics and some photos. i know magazine ads are different.

Is it as simple as not using background shadows? Please help!

Open the photo you want to use. Add the text. Now make a cutout of the top portion of the photo (usually a persons head) and place it on top of the text layer. I use DIP but it is done pretty much the same in all programs. Denis Germain has instructions at his site here.

Most people tend to use real ads as inspiration. If you take a look in the gallery some have been posted as examples that are used for ad inspired challenges. Magazine ads tend to rely heaviliy on font type ..probbaly more than newspaper but other that that not a huge difference.
Perhaps start with the challenges that are already posted?
